Travel Information
![]() ![]()
Summer weather in Finland is often perfect, so boating, camping and fishing on your lake of choice, sailing through the coastal islands, and family hikes though the countryside are most enjoyable.
![]()
Major attractions include the capital city of Helsinki and its Suomenlinna Sea Fortress and Linnanmaki Amusement Park; Porvoo, Finland's second oldest town; the wooden (old town) of Rauma, the world's biggest snow castle near Kemi; the month-long opera festival in Savonlinna in July, and Santa Claus Village near the town of Rovaniemi on the edge of the Arctic Circle.
![]()
Other popular points-of-interest include distinctive Aland and its many islands, Lapland and its Sami culture and the Aurora Borealis (northern lights), Medieval castles and fortresses, and a wide variety of national parks spread across the country.

In the southern reaches winter temperatures are milder, but still cold, while summer days (May through September) can be downright pleasant, and subsequently prove to be the best time to visit.
![]()
Above the Arctic Circle (in the far north) the summer sun never completely sets, thus the phrase, "Polar Night." Winter days there are dark and rather eerie as the sun never rises for almost two months.
![]()
Further south in Finland summer days are longer with lingering evening light. In winter the sun seems to just creep above the horizon; days are short, and available light is muted and less intense.
![]()
In winter, Finland (north to south) is covered by a blanket of snow. Along its eastern border with Russia, and in the northern areas that snow is often deep, with some remaining on the ground into early May, and much later to the north of the Arctic Circle.

Rainfall is spread somewhat evenly throughout the year, while summer storms with significant rainfall are rather common in the south.
![]() ![]() VISAS
![]() ![]()
For stays longer than 90 days regarding study, employment, or tourism, a visa is required and must be obtained in advance. For additional information please contact the Finland's Ministry for Foreign Affairs with jurisdiction over your country of residence.
