Gulf of Naples
![]() The Gulf of Naples is positioned in the Campania Region of southwestern Italy. It is fronted by the large city of Naples, a handful of smaller towns, Mount Vesuvius and the Roman ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum (both completely destroyed by an eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D.), and by the Sorrentine Peninsula and the beautiful town of Sorrento - the gateway to Positano and the stunning Amalfi Coast. ![]()
Offshore islands of note include Capri and Ischia, two of Italy's most popular island destinations. Both are easily reached by ferry from Naples or Sorrento.
