Travel Information

Famous for art, canals, ice skating, tulips, windmills, wooden shoes, and the city of Amsterdam, the Netherlands is simply a paradise for visitors. In fact, the entire country is brimming with grand architecture, world-class museums and other interesting attractions for the entire family.

As for art, the Netherlands is the ancestral home of famous masters, including Rembrandt and Van Gogh, and their namesake museums are not to be missed.

Add to that mix the Anne Frank Home and Museum, the world's tallest windmill, Royal Delft Pottery, wooden shoe factories and a myriad of cycling trails and recreational activities, and well, this small, but diverse country is a real gem.

Note: The Netherlands is somewhat pricey in the summer months, and advance planning is recommended, especially for family vacations. For travel tips, city details, major attractions and points-of-interest, follow the links below.

GENERAL ITEMS OF INTEREST

Currency Netherlands uses the euro countrywide. Instead of traveling with your own country's currency and then paying the somewhat expensive cash conversion rates, we suggest - to get the best exchange rate - you use an ATM for cash and credit cards for purchases.

Electricity The Netherlands runs on 220 volts AC (50 cycles).
Note that most modern laptop, cell phone and digital camera chargers are dual voltage and will work perfectly in The Netherlands with just a simple adapter plug. Find electrical adapters, products and tips here!

Times to Travel
The Netherlands has a moderate climate, with very pleasant summers. Winters are considered mild, yet most canals and rivers do freeze, and frigid temperatures are typical, though brief.

It is frequently windy here due to the extremely flat landscape, and in many ways, that wind benefits visitors as weather conditions change quickly, so bad weather seldom lasts long.

Rainfall is evenly split throughout the year, with the lowest amounts falling along the coast.

As for sunshine, spring and winter months offer only brief breaks from North Sea and rainy-day cloud cover, but summers do improve, and in June and July, 7 hours per day is just about the average.

Even though crowds can be large and attraction lines long, especially in Amsterdam, most travelers seem to agree that April through early October are the best months to visit The Netherlands.
