dot Travel Information

arrow Scotland is home to ancient castles and monuments, jagged coastlines from north to south, small villages and stylish cities, and an authentic maritime culture of nearly 800 islands with picturesque harbor towns, lighthouses, sandy beaches and numerous world-class fishing, sailing and wind surfing venues.

Now we'd be remiss if we didn't mention that Scotland is the birthplace of the glorious game of golf, a (manageable) mountain climbing paradise, and a growing mecca of wintersports activities.

For travel tips, city details, major attractions and points-of-interest, follow the links below.

GENERAL ITEMS OF INTEREST

arrow Currency Even though the United Kingdom is a member of the European Union (home of the Euro) England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all still use the Pound Sterling.

Note: Instead of traveling with your own country's currency and then paying the expensive cash conversion rates - to get the best exchange rate - we suggest you use an ATM for cash, and a credit card for purchases.

arrow Electricity Scotland runs on 230 volts AC (50 cycles). Note that most modern laptop, cell phone and digital camera chargers are dual voltage and will work perfectly in England with just a simple adapter plug. Find electrical adapters, products and tips here!

arrow Times to Travel Scotland's climate is much milder than expected (considering its location), as all of the British Isles are warmed some by the powerful Gulf Stream Current as it makes its way north through the waters of the North Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico.

There certainly are exceptions, but generally winters are damp, cool/cold and windy, and summers pleasant with frequent cloudy days. Precipitation is possible at most anytime, and the Northern Highlands can and do experience cold and snowy winters, and rapidly changing weather conditions with little advance warning.

Most travelers visit between May and August, and in the north during the summer months, the dark of night is hardly felt as the sun never totally sets.

VISAS

arrow A valid passport is required to enter Scotland. For stays up to six months visa requirements (if any) vary from country to country. To find out whether or not you need to apply for a visa, we suggest you the contact the applicable British Consulate.

For stays longer than six months regarding employment, study or tourism, a visa is required and must be obtained in advance. For additional information please contact the British Consulate with jurisdiction over your country of residence.
