Founded in 1943 by 17-year old Swedish carpenter Ingvar Kamprad, IKEA has ranked as the world's largest furniture retailer since 2008. The company’s name is an acronym consisting of initials from the founder's name (IK from Ingvar Kamprad), Elmtaryd (the farm where Kamprad was brought up), and Agunnaryd (Kamprad's hometown). The IKEA Group currently has 423 stores operating in 52 countries. Additionally, IKEA stores are operated by 11 different franchisees, which have franchise agreements with Inter IKEA Systems B.V. Germany
Germany is IKEA's largest market, with a current total of 53 locations. For example, the capital of Germany, Berlin, has four stores. The first IKEA store in Germany opened in 1974 in Munich (Munich Eching). Today, IKEA stores are spread across the country, the largest of which is located in Berlin-Lichtenberg, and encompasses an area of approximately 45,000 m2. China
