Countries WIth the Most Subway Restaurants
The United States
The US has 25,760 Subway restaurants. It is understandable that the US owns the highest number of restaurants as the Subway restaurant is a US franchise. The subway menu varies with locality, and in 2006 personal pizzas were introduced in the American market. The pizzas, just like the sandwiches, are made to order, though breakfast and pizza are only available in some restaurants. In 2016, the store made losses for the first time causing it to close some branches in the US. The food chain has kosher restaurants located in Israel and the US; the US stores grew to 12 but had closed down to five in 2011 due to the costs of running.
Canada
The first Subway in Canada was opened in 1986 in St. Johns Newfoundland and the brand has been quickly growing ever since. Today, Canada is home to 3,241 Subway restaurants, with 400 stores in British Columbia and 600 stores in Quebec. The food chain has low start-up costs and minimum space and equipment requirements which make it easier for entrepreneurs to apply and open a store. In February 2017, investigations by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) television series marketplace on chicken meat from five fast food chains unveiled that the chicken meat used in Subway restaurants in Canada was approximately 54% chicken meat and the rest soy protein. Chicken straight from the store would test 100% chicken, but with seasoning, during preparation, the percentage may drop. The chicken was lab-tested to determine their components. The allegations led to Subway suing CBC.
The United Kingdom
The first Subway to be opened in the UK was in Brighton in 1966; today the United Kingdom has 2,378 Subway restaurants. The restaurant targets to hit 3,000 stores in the UK by 2020 and to create more jobs. In 2016, the stores in the UK and Ireland had an annual income of £515 million. In 2010, Subway in the UK lost a court appeal that hoped to exempt them from paying VAT on toasted sandwiches; now they are required to pay standard VAT on toasted Subway sandwiches, whereas sandwiches are eaten cold away from the stores do not attract the tax. Subway is the largest fast-food chain in the UK, followed by Greggs and McDonald's. The subway stores in the UK are run by about 900 franchisees who are mostly local businessmen and women.
Building A Brand
A submarine sandwich is a type of sandwich made from a length of roll or bread cut lengthwise and stuffed with various, meats, vegetables, and cheeses. Subway became the largest fast-food chain, beating McDonald's, by the end of 2010. Subway was named the best food chain for healthy food, with top service in 2009 by a Zagat survey.
