Which Countries Border the Central African Republic?
The Central African Republic (CAR) is an African nation that is situated in the central part of the continent. The nation is landlocked, and it encompasses an area of about 240,535 square miles making it one of the largest landlocked countries globally. The country shares its land boundaries with six nations, which include the DRC, Sudan, South Sudan, the Republic of the Congo, Chad, and Cameroon.
Sudan
The CAR and Sudan are separated by a border that is approximately 108 miles long and is situated in the northeastern region of the Central African Republic. The boundary between the two nations was negotiated during the colonial era by the French, who at the time had control of the Central African Republic, and the British who at the time had control of Sudan. In the past, the border between South Sudan and the Central African Republic was significantly longer but after South Sudan gained its independence, the length reduced by roughly 655 miles.
The Democratic Republic Of The Congo
CAR and the DRC are separated by a border that is approximately 1085 miles long and is located on the southern edge of the Central African Republic. Several major rivers cross the border between the two nations with some of the most famous being the Oubangui, and Mbomou. There are several major cities located on the CAR side of the border such as Bangassou and Bangui.
Chad
The Central African Republic and Chad share a border that is roughly 966 miles long located in the northern edge of the country. One of the significant towns located on the Central African side of the border is Ndele.
Cameroon
The Central African Republic and Cameroon are separated by a border that is roughly 560 miles long and is located on the western edge of the country. There are several towns on the CAR side of the border with some of the most famous being Carnot, Bouar, and Nola. On the southern edge of the border, it traces the same path as the Sangha River. Mount Ngaoui is also situated on the border between the two countries.
The Republic Of The Congo
The border which is roughly 302 miles long separates the CAR and the Republic of Congo. The border is situated in the southwestern edge of the CAR and was determined during the colonial period. Some of the towns located on the Central African side of the border include Mbaiki, Boda, and Zinga.
South Sudan
South Sudan and the Central African Republic are separated by a border that is roughly 655 miles long located on the eastern edge of the Central African Republic. The border previously formed part of the boundary that separated the CAR from Sudan. The CAR established official diplomatic ties with South Sudan in 2012 more than a year after recognizing it as an independent nation.
