10 Most Scenic Towns in Utah

Utah is a nature lover's paradise; it ranks near the top in the most mountainous states category and third nationally for total national parks. The "Beehive State" provides tourists with many cozy small towns that are brim with scenic views. Whether exploring picturesque landscapes along one of Utah's many hiking trails, paddling on a boat while looking up into the cloud-capped mountains, or taking a brisk walk through quaint streets, Utah's small towns will give you moments to cherish at every corner. So, pack your bags and Fall jacket, and let's explore these scenic gems. 

Cedar City

This historic town was founded 172 years ago when settlers arrived to establish ironworks. Given the abundance of luscious trees in the settlement, it became known as "Fort Cedar." Today, Cedar City has blossomed into a vibrant small town with scenic national parks and several outdoor activities for nature enthusiasts. The Cedar Breaks National Monument provides two well-known hiking trails as well as the Point Supreme Campground, which offers campers 25 sites, allowing them to gaze at the meadows 10,000 feet above sea level. And just 32 miles away lies the Brian Head Resort, a premier ski destination with peaks available for beginners and advanced skiers alike, as well as overnight stays at the Brian Head Lodge & Spa.  

Moab

This town provides visitors with scenic views from within and outside its borders. Moab's natural geographic features are so stunning it brings three million visitors annually — almost as much as Utah's entire population! Take Canyonlands National Park, for example; it consists of canyons, buttes (isolated steep hills), and rivers, all providing a unique contrast for an epic view. And if you're up for a fun challenge, you can even mountain bike. Another notable feature is the Arches National Park — it's home to more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches that have morphed into their peculiar spiraling shapes over the course of millions of years. The "Caribbean of the Rockies" is located right beside Bear Lake; known for its distinctive clear blue color due to the lack of impurities, it provides scenic views that are nothing short of majestic — think unspoiled bodies of water and towering mountains covered by trees, all with the luxury of a small town to provide your sustenance and basic needs. Since Garden City is beside a lake, popular activities include sailing, waterskiing, and fishing. Alternatively, for a less strenuous option, Garden City Park provides a relaxing atmosphere to walk along the beach. 

Huntsville

Named after Western pioneer and soldier Jefferson Hunt, this town is located just 10 miles away from the Snowbasin Resort, one of the oldest ski resorts in all of America, having opened in 1939, 84 years ago. And it isn't just your run-of-the-mill ski resort — it hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics alpine skiing races, in addition to where the psychological horror film Frozen was filmed. Aside from Snowbasin, Huntsville is also just a brief six-minute drive from the Anderson Cove Campground — a premier campsite located beside Pineview Reservoir waters where campers can revel in stunning views and partake in spirited volleyball games along the beach. 

Springdale

This town is just minutes away from the world-famous Zion National Park — home to one of the most stunning canyons on the entire planet. Its beauty is so captivating that President William Howard Taft designated the area as a national monument in 1909. The geological metamorphosis of the steep canyon walls represents over 150 million years of sedimentation, giving rock climbers a world-class spot to hone and practice their skills. However, for risk-averse individuals wanting something less risky, you can take a helicopter tour and witness the breathtaking aerial views from above or opt for the Zion Shuttle, which ensures tourists access to the finest locations, all from the comfort of your cozy seat. Mt Pleasant

Mt. Pleasant is just 2.8 square miles, but after your visit, you will see why it's a 'pleasant' town as its name suggests. It serves as a gateway town to numerous mountain peaks, including South Tent Mountain and Lowry Top, offering you breathtaking views of Utah's enchanting landscapes from above. Other notable attractions include the Basin Drive-In Theatre, and if you're a parent, this quaint town has a children's museum called the Mt. Pleasant Discovery Museum, where kids can experience fun and interactive exhibits related to science, math, and art.  

Torrey

Torrey is a gateway town to Capitol Reef National Park. In 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the park as a national monument to safeguard its many geographical features, including its renowned vibrant-colored canyons and buttes. During your stop here, you will be provided ample opportunities to view scenic spots, hiking trails, and even the historic Gifford Homestead, a landmark settlement that displays life during the early 1900s when Mormons first settled in the area. Aside from Capital Reef, Torrey is also close to Fish Lake and Dixie National Forest, the largest national forest in Utah. 

Kanab

Founded in 1870 by 10 Mormon families, Kanab has blossomed into a vibrant town filled with scenic views all year round. This town is nicknamed "Little Hollywood" since production companies regularly come to film in the town's stunning landscapes. Furthermore, Kanab is also known for being close to many premier national parks. One such park is the Bryce Canyon National Park, a unique park that harbors uniquely shaped hoodoos, also known as fairy chimneys and earth pyramids; these tall and narrow rock formations can be seen scattered across Bryce Canyon, giving you the opportunity to take novel pictures you wouldn't get anywhere else. Another distinctive feature of Kanab is its sprawling dining industry that provides tourists with many superb options, ensuring you have plenty of nourishment for all the spots to explore.  

Brigham City

Located beneath the Wellsville Mountains and home to 16,000 residents, this mid-sized town is close to several parks and historical sites. A notable feature of Brigham is the Bear River Migratory Bird Refugee; spanning 74,000 acres, this wildlife refuge is home to millions of migratory birds every year, including well-known species like the bald eagle and tundra swans. For a guided tour, the James V. Hansen Wildlife Education Center offers fun and engaging tours, providing an educational opportunity while immersing yourself in the vast landscape. Other notable activities include hiking, cycling, and fishing. If you prefer to stay in town, Rees Pioneer Park has tons of amenities and features, including a lake, swimming pool, a grill area, and a performance stage for concerts and other venues.  

Heber City

This picturesque town, just 45 minutes away from Salt Lake City, is known for harboring some of America's best outdoor spots — so much so that Heber City's tourism industry is all year-round. Winters provide tourists with world-class ski and snowboard resorts, while the Fall and Summer months are conducive for hiking and fishing. Since Heber is a tourist town, administrators launched the Heber Valley Railroad, where tourists can explore magnificent scenic locations in and around town during a 90-minute trip, and each year, over 110,000 passengers hop on the rail to explore Heber City. Furthermore, they also provide seasonal-themed rides, with the latest being the "Halloween Express Train" from now till the end of October. Another noteworthy feature of Heber City is the Jordanelle State Park, which offers some of the best campgrounds in Utah.
