Colorado has some of the most unique and adorable small towns on the Western coast of the United States. For 2024, these eight small towns will give visitors unique ways to visit Colorado's mountains and vast plains. Durango

Durango is unique, with lots of action. Love trains? Visitors will be in heaven by experiencing the Railroad Museum. Train enthusiasts can enjoy the thrill of an old steam engine and ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad rails. A beautiful excursion, enjoy the mountain scenery surrounding the Durango area that one can only experience by train.

Durango is also home to a hot spring surrounded by a natural view. The Durango hot spring uses a blend of minerals to remove the sulfuric odor while purifying the natural water. The Durango area is also near the famous Mesa Verde National Park, offering plenty of outdoor recreation. There’s so much to see and do in this adorable town you’ll want to return more than once!

Nederland

Nederland is a quirky small town 17 miles west of the big city of Boulder. Locals call it the gateway to the Indian Peaks Wilderness Area, but there are diverse activities to partake in, including dining, shopping, and even riding a handmade carousel. Nederland offers educational nature programs at the Wild Bear Mountain Ecology Center, which are perfect for kids. Nederland provides access to picnic areas, hiking, and mountain biking trails in the Barker Meadow Reservoir, and if fishing is your passion, you’ll find plenty of opportunities for stream and lake fishing.

The Carousel of Happiness is a treat. The carousel is a fully restored 1910 carousel with 56 hand-carved and painted animals moving to the sound of a 1913 Wurlitzer band organ. It’s a unique and affordable activity for all ages. For history buffs, visit the Nederland Area Historical Society’s Mining Museum or the free community library.

Lyons

Lyons is an adorable community that sits at the base of the mountains east of Estes Park. It’s an interesting and beautiful small town that caters to road bikers, walkers, fishers, eaters, and shoppers. Visitors can bike safely anywhere in Lyons and stop at accessible restaurants, coffee shops, or bistros in the heart of town. Lyons also supports a free bike tool station outside The Stone Coffee shop. Bikers can fix a flat or make adjustments as needed. One popular road biking experience is the Peak to Peak Loop. The Peak to Peak Loop is 50 miles long and runs from Lyons to Ward through the south St. Vrain canyon.

Visitors can also enjoy free mountain biking or tubing in St. Vrain Creek. In the heart of this adorable town, you can peruse the shops or fish. Or, sit back at a creekside cafe and enjoy the view and fresh mountain air.

Frisco is a mountain ski town in the Colorado mountains. Summer visitors can enjoy Lake Dillon either on the swim beach or by renting a canoe or kayak from the friendly marina. Lake Dillon not only has water activities but is fully surrounded by a paved biking or hiking trail. Camping spots are available or stay in town and enjoy the small-town amenities, including local shops and restaurants.

This adorable town offers chuck wagon rides, a free skate park, and a large disc golf course. Throughout the summer, you can finish up the day with a free concert. For example, in August, you can see Doc Robinson, Nik Parr & the Selfless Lovers, or Horizon Line.

In the winter, Frisco becomes an all-out holiday town with elaborate holiday decorations, skiing, and ice skating. Take a walk in the adorable winter wonderland while sipping a hot beverage.

Buena Vista

Visitors will adore the views in Buena Vista. This unique small town offers local hot springs for relaxing those muscles and skiing, hiking, biking, and four-wheeling trails. Tourists using the hundreds of miles of public trails will stumble upon an array of ghost towns to explore.

Summer visitors can experience the thrill of whitewater rafting or quietly fishing from the Arkansas River. Consider fishing from the Twin Lakes or nearby Turquoise Lake. The adorable town of Buena Vista offers a variety of outfitting stores to serve every visitor’s needs. Take a stroll through this quaint farming town or visit a working farm and pick your own fruit right from the trees. In July, attend the fabulous small-town celebration, the Paonia Cherry Days. Watch the parade and enjoy all things made with cherries, from cakes, pies, and shakes to wine and cider.

Stay for the community fireworks show and barbeque. Cherry Days is an adorable and homey festival that brings out the best of Paonia in the summer. Art aficionados who visit in summer will also like the fact that Paonia is part of the North Fork Valley Creative Coalition and is a Colorado Creative District.

Trinidad

Lake City sits amongst the southern Colorado San Juan Mountains. Visitors can visit San Cristobal Lake for hiking, biking, boating, fishing, and swimming.
