These eight beautiful small towns in Missouri put the “show” in the “show me state”! You can catch a live show in the Live Entertainment Capital of the World, fish along the Missouri River, or go shopping in Walt Disney’s hometown. Far removed from the bustle of bigger cities like Kansas City, these small towns are what the beautiful state of Missouri is all about.

Cape Girardeau

Cape Girardeau is a beautiful blend of historical sites, scenic views, and a rich cultural heritage. Founded in the late 1700s, it’s home to stunning architecture and a bustling downtown area. Visitors can shop in the historical district downtown and check out its many locally-owned shops, cafes, and boutiques. The downtown area is also home to popular festivals like the Cape Girardeau Air Festival and the River Tales Classic Car Show. History buffs won't want to miss exploring Fort D Historic Site, which displays relics from the Civil War.

For a more leisurely change of pace, take a stroll on the River Walk along the Mississippi River. It’s a 1.25-mile scenic cobblestone walk where visitors can watch tugboats float down the Mississippi River or catch a glimpse of the stunning Mississippi River Tales Mural, which details the rich history of Cape Girardeau.

Carthage

Carthage, aka “America's Maple Leaf City,” is a must-see in the fall. On the third Saturday of October, Carthage holds its annual Maple Leaf Festival, which draws visitors from all over the state. It hosts a parade that starts at the beautiful Historic Square to kick off the festivities of crafts, local food, and live music.

Fun fact: the famous Route 66 runs right through Carthage! Be sure to check out one of many Route 66 attractions in the area, like the Boots Court Motel or the quirky 66 Drive-In Theatre. Be sure to take the kids to Carthage Municipal Park, which has a small kid park called KiddyLand and plenty of hiking trails!

Parkville

Just 14 miles out of Kansas City, Parkville offers a friendly, small-town feel without traveling too far from the city. The historic downtown district's brick-lined streets are charming and lined with unique antique stores, shops, and cafes. Art lovers will adore the Parkville Artisans’ Studio, which displays local art and offers classes, workshops, and private parties. It’s also home to Park University, which can be found on the National Register of Historic Places.

Parkville is no stranger to rich parks, sweeping views of the Missouri River, and delightful hiking trails. Head to English Landing Park for a full day on the water. It offers a picnic area and a boat launch to fish on the Missouri River or to catch an amazing sunset. Visitors can also walk one of their many accessible hiking trails. Other notable parks include the Parkville Nature Sanctuary and Platte Landing Park.

Marceline

Gather round, Disney lovers! Marceline is home to the one and only Walt Disney, and it inspired much of Disney’s work in animation and the Disney Parks. In fact, the charming downtown area of Marceline inspired Main Street USA in the Disney parks. Visitors can walk the quaint streets to do a little shopping in the locally-owned shops or grab a bite to eat at Cafe Marceline. Branson

Also known as the Live Entertainment Capital of the World, Branson is a family-friendly town with so much to see! Along the famous 76 Country Boulevard are a host of theaters that offer a variety of entertainment, from music to live theater and magic shows. Be sure to head to Branson Landing to indulge in a bit of shopping and entertainment. It offers fantastic views and waterside dining on Lake Taneycomo.

However, Branson's biggest claim to fame is Silver Dollar City! Silver Dollar City is a late 1800s-theme amusement park that is perfect for the whole family. Ride on rollercoasters, eat local food, and catch a live show! It’s also home to seasonal festivals happening year-round. Clarksville

The city of Clarksville is one of Missouri’s true hidden gems! With scenic views, amazing parks, and a historic downtown district, there’s something here for everyone! The downtown area hosts perfectly preserved 19th-century buildings with plenty of shopping, antique stores, and cafes worth checking out. Lock and Dam No. 24 is the heart of Clarksville, and it’s the perfect site to relax and bird watch. In fact, Clarksville is famous for its eagle-watching along Lock and Dam No. 24. The town hosts an Eagle Days festival in January to celebrate the arrival of migrating Eagles!

Located on the Great River Road National Scenic Byway, Clarksville is a perfect town to relax and take in the beautiful scenery along the Mississippi River. Be sure to head to the Clarksville Riverfront Park for amazing views, fishing, community events, and quaint hiking trails.

Hannibal

Hannibal is the home of Mark Twain, and the town serves as inspiration for his many novels. Walking through the town of Hannibal feels like stepping inside the pages of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” While you’re there, be sure to explore Mark Twain's Boyhood Home and Museum, which gives visitors a little more insight into the famous novelist, as well as display his works. Hannibal is so proud of its famous hometown novelist that it also hosts Tom Sawyer Days every July.

Rocheport
