Tucked away in Minnesota's easternmost county, Grand Marais is an adorable North Shore stunner that can make one's heart purr with ecstasy. Grand Marais sits along the northwestern shore of Lake Superior, the world's largest freshwater lake by area. Once a fishing village, Grand Marais is today a big name in vacation circles.

One Grand Marais highlight is the North House Folk School, which teaches traditional northern crafts, including boat-building, blacksmithing, and knitting — all without the need for exams, term papers, or credits. When hunger pangs begin to set in, the curiously named Angry Trout Cafe, which clings to the edge of Grand Marais Harbor, serves delectable seafood in a light and casual environment. For avid hikers, however, the Gunflint Trail National Scenic Byway is mouthwatering and filled with birds, moose, and deer. One can even hear the howls of wolves.

Although vibrant, Traverse City boasts a population of just about 15,000; hence, blends the sweet spot between small-town feel and big-city glamor and glitz. There is never a dull moment here. Traverse Bay, which boasts more than 130 miles of continuous Lake Michigan shoreline, is filled with sites ideal for those who want to swim, sail, or just go beachcombing.

The nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, whose high dunes offer gasp-inducing views of the shimmering waters of Lake Michigan, should be a must-do. If this will whet one's appetite, viewers of ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America” once voted this slice of heaven the “Most Beautiful Place in America.” Reflections Bistro, although a bit eclectic, serves delicious meals. On the flip side, a drive out to Lake Ann Brewery is fun on a summer evening, especially when one sits outside while tapping their feet to the sound of mood-lifting music. Hit up the Treat Farm Trail out to the shore, especially if looking for spectacular views and do not want to break a sweat.
