2024's Towns In North Dakota That Come Alive In The Fall

As the leaves turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold, North Dakota transforms into a picturesque landscape that beckons travelers to explore its small towns. In 2024, peak fall color is anticipated for northern North Dakota around October 1 to 15 and in the area south of Bismarck and Fargo from about October 10 to 20. But even if you miss the peak leaf-peeping window, North Dakota’s many small-town autumn festivals make the season an enchanting time to visit. Medora

At the gateway to Theodore Roosevelt National Park (which offers free entry on Veterans Day, November 11), Medora offers breathtaking views of the Badlands dressed in fall colors. Come in early October to experience peak fall color and spy bison, elk, deer, prairie dogs, and more. Back in town, the famous Medora Musical revue always closes for the season in early September, but Medora hosts several great fall events. The 2024 roster includes the Ring of Fire musical (September 11-October 27, 2024), Wild West Fall Fest (October 26), and Downtown Sip & Shop (November 9).

Bottineau

Set close to the Canadian border and known as the "Gateway to the Turtle Mountains," Bottineau is a must-visit for fall foliage enthusiasts. Before the snow blankets the ski slopes, Bottineau Winter Park’s surrounding forests showcase vibrant autumn colors in early October. Amble along the park’s many trails for a perfect view of the changing leaves. Bottineau Winter Park also hosts its annual Fall Family Festival on October 11, 2024. For both bird watchers and game bird hunters, autumn is also the best time to spot migratory birds at nearby Lake Metigoshe.

Jamestown

Home to the iconic “World’s Largest Buffalo” (a 26-foot tall statue) and the National Buffalo Museum, Jamestown offers a blend of natural wonder and artistic beauty. The well-known Jamestown Arts Center hosts numerous fall events, including the Manhattan Short Film Festival (September 27-October 6, 2024) and the Autumn Arts Open House (October 20). For breathtaking fall views during the peak foliage time in mid-October, head to the nearby Jamestown Reservoir, where the water reflects the brilliant autumn foliage. Grafton, located in eastern North Dakota’s Red River Valley, is known for its charming downtown and scenic surroundings. The annual Grafton Arts and Craft Show (October 12, 2024) celebrates autumn with craft vendors, great food, and friendly locals, while the Grafton Corn Maze (weekends through October 5-6) offers classic family fun. If you prefer a spookier experience, check out the Scare Oaks Haunted Woods, running on Friday and Saturday nights through October. For peak seasonal shades in early October, the nearby Pembina Gorge offers stunning vistas and hiking opportunities to take in the vibrant hues.

Rugby

While the claim is disputed by a handful of other North Dakota towns, Rugby has taken pride in calling itself the geographical center of North America for nearly 100 years. Get your tourist photo by the “Geographical Center” stone marker, then experience Rugby’s distinctive charm. Enjoy the fall foliage (which peaks in early October) as you walk through the Historic Rugby Living History Museum, followed by a downtown meal at Coffee Cottage Cafe or Third Street Station. Carrington is known for its beautiful city park, which is large enough to have eight campsites and a charming downtown that includes local shops like the Garden Gate, Petals & Stems, and Central Pharmacy. East-central North Dakota sees peak fall color in early-to-mid October, and Carrington is close to several premier leaf-peeping destinations. Make sure your fall foliage tour includes Hawk’s Nest Butte, just southwest of town; Lake Juanita, about 25 miles east of Carrington; and the 16,000-acre Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge, located around 15 miles southeast of town.

Valley City

Valley City, North Dakota’s "City of Bridges," is a hidden gem in the eastern part of the state. The town gets started on the 2024 Halloween season on October 5 with a Spooky Spike Showdown volleyball tournament, Halloween Costume Fun Run, and the Parktober Festival, featuring a pumpkin patch, corn pit, barrel train rides, and more. This is also the beginning of Valley City’s peak fall foliage season, and the ​Sheyenne River Valley Scenic Byway is one of North Dakota’s prime spots for leaf-peeping.
