2024's Towns In Utah That Come Alive In Fall

Utah is renowned worldwide for its natural beauty. From its red rock deserts and epic national parks to the Great Salt Lake and the towering peaks of the Wasatch Mountains, this rugged state is among the top regions in America for outdoor adventure. Many opt to visit in the summer, some in the winter for skiing, but today, we will be focusing on why Utah is among the top destinations to enjoy in the fall. Whether it is vast forests that explode with color and the leaves change or other seasonal activities, these small towns should go on your to-do list this 2024.

Moab

Moab, located in eastern Utah near the border of Colorado, is one of the best destinations for outdoor travel in general. It is also spectacular in the fall, thanks to its proximity to iconic national parks and numerous stunning red rock landscapes that can be easily explored as the weather cools. Arches National Park, just minutes from town, is home to more than 2,000 natural stone arches. Also nearby, Canyonlands National Park contains vast canyons, mesas, and buttes. Again, the fall season offers cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, so it is ideal for hiking and photography.

Moab’s surrounding La Sal Mountains, which contain much more forested land than the above-mentioned national parks, turn golden in autumn. This makes for an amazing backdrop for mountain biking or a leisurely drive on the La Sal Mountain Loop Road. The town itself also embraces the fall season with various events, including the Moab Folk Festival in early November.

Torrey

Torrey, located near Capitol Reef National Park in the heart of Utah, is an idyllic fall destination where the Fremont River Valley and surrounding mountains make for a stunning landscape, regardless of what time of the year you're in town. Capitol Reef’s unique sandstone cliffs and rock formations are a must-see and contrast nicely with the bright yellows and oranges of the cottonwoods and aspens growing in the area. Be sure to hike some of the park’s most scenic trails, such as the Hickman Bridge Trail and Capitol Gorge.

Torrey itself offers a charming and quiet atmosphere during the fall months, with local shops, cafes, and other amenities. Capitol Burger is a highly-rated spot to grab a bite while here. For those looking to enjoy an insanely clear night sky, Capitol Reef is an International Dark Sky Park, making stargazing a perfect fall activity when the air is crisp and clear.

Park City

Park City is Utah's famous ski town (while snow is on the ground), but it is just as beautiful and eventful in the fall months. Nestled in the Wasatch Mountains, this renowned town is a hub for hiking and sightseeing just outside of the bustling Salt Lake City. Popular trails, such as the Mid Mountain Trail and Armstrong Trail, offer some of the best hiking and mountain biking in the area, each having incredible vistas over the area.

Beyond nature, Park City hosts several fall-centered events that draw visitors, including the Park City Wine Festival in early October. This tasty occasion celebrates regional wines and high-end cuisine, a perfect way to warm up in the chilly mountain air. You don't have to exert yourself on a hike to see the wonderful surrounding landscape- a drive along the nearby Guardsman Pass offers sweeping roadside views of the fall colors blanketing the mountainsides.

Springdale, one of the gateway towns to Zion National Park, is a must-visit in the fall, especially for those looking to spend an extended stay in the famous park. Seated along the Virgin River, this small town provides direct access to Zion’s dramatic cliffs, canyons, and towering rock formations, which are perfectly accented by the red, yellow, and orange foliage that call the canyon home. Cooler fall weather makes it an ideal time to hike Zion’s famous trails, which generally see sweltering temperatures during the peak summer months. Angels Landing is a particularly popular spot for those who aren't afraid of heights!

In town, the Zion Canyon Farmers Market runs through early October. The market features local produce, artisanal goods, and, on occasion, live music, making it a perfect stop to get a feel for the town's welcoming spirit and locally grown products.

Heber City, located in the lush Heber Valley, a short drive southeast of Salt Lake City, is a fantastic rural area to escape big city life for a little while this fall. The area’s rolling hills and the nearby mountain slopes of the Wasatch range are a picturesque backdrop for whatever you may get up to during your visit.

A popular way to enjoy the fall scenery here is by riding the historic Heber Valley Railroad. This railroad offers scenic excursions through Provo Canyon, allowing you to soak in the fall foliage from the comfort of vintage rail cars. Just outside of town, the Jordanelle Reservoir and Deer Creek State Park are popular spots for late-season fishing, kayaking, and boating. For those seeking more adventure, the nearby Uinta National Forest is an excellent place to explore some of the area's best hiking and biking trails.

This desert town rides Utah's southern border with Arizona and is a remarkable fall destination surrounded by striking yet rugged landscapes and famous natural wonders. The town is an ideal base for exploring nearby national parks, including Bryce Canyon, Zion, and the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, each offering breathtaking autumn views. As with many other places on this list, the cooler fall weather and thinned-out crowds mean that fall is a great time to explore the area outdoors.

You should also try to check out nearby attractions like the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, where the soft, shifting dunes are popular for both off-roading and photography. In town, Kanab celebrates the season with its annual Red Rocktoberfest, a festival that highlights local businesses and features many fun activities for the whole family.
