So step away from the usual tourist spots and discover the distinct activities of these six towns!

Duck owes its name to the early 20th century when duck hunting was a popular pastime in the Albemarle and Currituck Sounds. While the town has since evolved into a quieter, more residential community, hunters continue to frequent the nearby marshes and Outer Banks in search of their next catch. Besides hunting, tourists come to Duck to relax at Sanderling Resort, a large coastal complex with three restaurants, two pools, a spa, and cozy firepits for the winter months.

In order to get around town, visitors can stroll along the mile-long boardwalk, which connects restaurants and shops together and provides gorgeous coastal views. Travelers cannot leave the little town of Duck until they have tried Duck Donuts, vanilla caked donuts prepared hot and fresh and served with a variety of mouthwatering toppings, such as cinnamon and sugar, Oreo cookies, and even bacon.

In 1910, Judge Heriot Clarkson founded the town of Little Switzerland in the Blue Ridge Mountains, naming it after its striking similarity to the Swiss Alps. Though firmly rooted in North Carolina, the town offers visitors a taste of the European Alps through its scenic trails and mountain views. Travelers can hike a 2.5-mile trail out to Crabtree Falls, which cascades over a 60-foot cliff, or ride through Diamond Back Trail, a 12-mile-long motorcycle route that passes through the Pisgah National Forest.

If you are in the mood for mountain music and square dancing, spend an evening at Geneva Hall, a cultural icon in Little Switzerland that holds events every Saturday during the summer months. For hickory-smoked barbecue, make sure to stop by Switzerland Cafe, which has one of the state’s largest wood-fired smokehouses. Looking for an elevated dining experience? Visit the Switzerland Inn Chalet Restaurant, where you can enjoy high-quality breakfast, lunch, and dinner alongside panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
