6 Unspoiled Small Towns in the Great Lakes Region

The Great Lakes, a series of massive bodies of freshwater, form a path across eastern North America. They constitute the largest collection of freshwater lakes on Earth in terms of total area. Spanning more than 94,000 square miles, the Great Lakes are made up of Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, collectively holding approximately 20% of the world's fresh surface water.

Each of the lakes has its own distinct character and story. Spreading through eight American states and two Canadian provinces, the Great Lakes bring more than just breathtaking shorelines. Right on their shorelines, the lakes are home to small towns that have managed to stay unaltered from heavy development and kept their distinct atmosphere alive.

With a peaceful ambiance and natural beauty, these towns provide a quiet escape from the busy world. Read on and discover six of these hidden treasures residing amongst the Great Lakes Region.

Bayfield, Wisconsin

Sitting along Lake Superior, the small town of Bayfield is home to around 600 people. Free from the noisy blur that's often seen in larger tourist hangouts, it sits in quiet tranquility. Its charm lies in its position as a gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Here, you will find a group of 22 untouched islands to see and explore. They have sea caves, sandy beaches, and lighthouses to discover.

The town has also retained a rustic, historic feel. The main road through Bayfield, called Rittenhouse Avenue, houses a collection of old brick buildings, reflecting the town's long heritage. Just a block off Rittenhouse, the Bayfield Carnegie Library built in 1904 is one of the town's beautiful locations to see.

Its untouched feel extends to the outdoors, with lots to explore. Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island offers beaches to relax on, and forest trails with stunning views of Lake Superior. In winter, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Mainland Sea Caves transform into dramatic, untouched ice formations, if you do not mind braving the cold.

Not many places are close to a big urban center but still retain their unspoiled feel, but Lutsen sure does. The town is surrounded by the massive, Superior National Forest, which is carefully managed to protect its ecosystems. Some parts of the woodland, like the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness or BWCAW for short, have limited entries. They do not allow motor-powered boats and construction projects in many of its areas.

Lutsen is a small, quaint place with around 200 people living there year-round. Even when tourists visit, the place keeps its calm feel, unlike other holiday towns that have become overdeveloped, expanding off into the surrounding areas. For example, the Lutsen Resort and nearby accommodations are modest and harmonize well with the surrounding environment.

The stones are preserved remains of ancient coral from around 350 million years ago. You can spot them on the shores of Lake Michigan, particularly near Petoskey.

One way for towns to keep an untouched feel is to keep their heritage alive and well. Chagrin Falls has done this by preserving the architectural splendor of its downtown area. Specifically, the Chagrin Falls Historic District has kept its allure with buildings from Victorian times and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The town's star attraction, Chagrin Falls, is situated at the heart of the community. Instead of giving the green light to excessive growth around this attraction, the township has kept a cozy park and walking routes. Riverside Park and the promenade beside the falls let guests enjoy the view of the waterfall without creating any disturbances.
