Although the rest of the country might not realize it, North Carolina residents know their state has a quirkier side to it. As the birthplace of Pepsi Cola, the inspiration for Andy Griffith, and home to mountains reminiscent of the Swiss Alps and countless waterfalls, the Tar Heel State is full of distinct experiences. Whether you are a visitor to the state or a lifelong resident, these seven eclectic towns are sure to surprise you with their uniqueness.

Cashiers

Cashiers is home to some of the world’s oldest mountains and the tallest waterfalls in the region. Just a 20-minute drive from downtown, travelers can visit Whitewater Falls by following a short paved path to an overlook with incredible views of the 411-foot plunging falls. Whiteside Mountain Trail is another popular outdoor attraction, featuring a 2-mile loop trail that rises above 750-foot sheer cliffs, overlooking the valley below.

Throughout the year, Cashiers holds a variety of entertaining events, including the Cashiers Rotary Arts & Crafts Festival, which displays the work of more than 90 southeast regional artisans, and the Cashiers Leaf Festival, which celebrates fall foliage by bringing over 100 artisans to the Village Green and Commons park. Handcrafted pottery, wood, and jewelry, are just a few of the items for sale.

Mount Airy

Mount Airy may feel familiar to Andy Griffith fans, as one of the major inspirations for the set of the Andy Griffith shows. Throughout town, travelers can reminisce at iconic locations from the show such as Snappy Lunch, Floyd’s City Barber Shop, the Old Mayberry Jail, and even Andy’s childhood home.

To admire authentic memorabilia from the show, visitors should also spend an afternoon at the Andy Griffith Museum, which features mementos from the show’s actors and set. Located on a barrier island, there are many water sports to do in the area today, such as kayaking, paddle boarding, and sailing in the Currituck Sound.

Near town, travelers can explore multiple waterfalls, including Grassy Creek Falls, Crabtree Falls, and Linville Falls. The Diamond Back Trail is a popular route for adventurous motorcycles, a 12-mile loop that features around 200 curves and incredible views of the Blue Ridge Mountains throughout.
