Located 120 miles north of Kansas City on the Missouri River and only a hop, skip, and jump from the state of Missouri, a visit to Brownville is a wise choice for those wanting a taste of authentic Nebraska. Founded in 1854, Brownville’s well-preserved buildings and classic architecture are home to various interesting attractions and locally owned shops, including old bookstores and folk-art galleries.

Brownville is also home to one of the state’s most unique attractions: the Museum of Missouri River History. Housed in Captain Meriwether Lewis, a historic paddle steamer once used to dredge the Missouri River, here you’ll learn about the ship and its work and the river’s Native American heritage. Need somewhere to stay? Book a night or two at the River Inn Resort, a unique floating B&B that makes for the perfect base to explore this part of the river.

McCook

Head south off the I-76 to Denver, and you’ll find the small Nebraska town of McCook. The self-proclaimed capital of the Buffalo Commons, 139,000 square miles of prairies proposed as a massive nature preserve, McCook is making a name for itself as a base for curious travelers looking to explore the region. From McCook, you can now book buffalo tours that will get you (safely) up close to these large beasts while exposing you to stunning Old West scenery.

The surrounding state recreation areas of Red Willow, Medicine Creek, Swanson, and Enders are also popular places to visit in Nebraska and offer fun outdoor activities, including swimming, fishing, and picnicking in settings that remain largely untouched by modern development. You can also learn more about the region at McCook’s Museum of the High Plains.

While a must-see for literary aficionados, the well-preserved redbrick buildings of the small yet interesting downtown are very photogenic.

Outdoor activities include hiking in Willa Cather Memorial Prairie, popular for its picturesque trails, and the town’s historic golf course, which regularly features among the top 9-hole golf courses in the Midwest.

Nearby attractions include the Mansion on the Hill, built in 1887, and now a museum providing historical insight with period furnishings and local artifacts.
