7 Old-World Towns to Visit in the Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes region is known for its dramatic beauty and tranquility in central New York. Aptly named after 11 long, slender lakes that lay across its landscape like fingers, this region offers so much more than scenic views; it's a place where nature and history coexist harmoniously. The rolling vineyards, hills, and small, quaint towns are what the Finger Lakes region avails when one is looking for an ideal retreat from the cacophony of city life.

On the east shore of Cayuga Lake, Aurora takes visitors deeply back in time and offers a first-hand glimpse into living history. Anchoring the center of town is the Inns of Aurora, a cluster of beautifully updated 19th-century buildings, including the 1833 Aurora Inn. A stroll away, the MacKenzie-Childs Studio introduces touring into a fairytale-like Victorian farmhouse where every handmade ceramic and home furnishing detail is a work of art. The Aurora Arts and Design Center, for those who enjoy art and design, gives space for works of regional artisans and a touch of modernity to historic environs. For nature lovers, Long Point State Park is just a drive away and offers beautiful hiking trails and picnic spots along the lake.

Just down the road, the Skaneateles Historical Society Museum, located in a former creamery, helps in learning about the storied past of the town. For the art world, the John D. Barrow Art Gallery features the works of its namesake, a native 19th-century painter. Mid-Lakes Navigation Cruises offers the best boat tours across Skaneateles Lake and is not to be missed; it is an easy way to view nature. Second to none, the Skaneateles Antique and Classic Boat Show is held annually, attracting enthusiasts to view perfectly restored classic boats that pop right across the lake.

Curtiss Museum appeals to aviation history buffs with memorabilia from the life of Hammondsport native Glenn Curtiss, "father of American aviation." Wine aficionados will appreciate Pleasant Valley Wine Company, America's oldest bonded winery, 1860. For something a bit more modern, the town's Depot Park offers nice views of Keuka Lake and a quiet place to sit. The nearby Finger Lakes Boating Museum gives insight into the rich maritime history of this area, while a trip to Bully Hill Vineyards rounds out your visit perfectly.

Geneva is a lovely city placed on the northern shore of Seneca Lake. Its plus factors include scenic beauty, history, and culture. It is further home to the Belhurst Castle, a sprawling stone mansion from the 1880s, now an inn and winery. Geneva provides a scenic park that harbors Seneca Lake State Park for those who want to enjoy the lake's beauty. While the Geneva History Museum is currently closed for renovation, visitors can still observe the historic building from the outside. Wine connoisseurs will enjoy a tour given at the Three Brothers Wineries and Estates, which attempts something highly unusual in housing three wineries and a brewery under one roof.

The Oliver House Museum houses artifacts from the town's 19th-century industries, while the scenic Keuka Outlet Trail follows an old canal system past historic mills and waterfalls. And not to be outdone in adding to the cultural wealth of the town comes the restored 1910 Sampson Theatre vaudeville venue. Not to be missed, too, is the Arts Center of Yates County with its changing exhibits featuring local artists. Wine lovers will want to stop at Fox Run Vineyards, which gives a tour through a sustainable vineyard with a dramatic view of Keuka Lake.

The village of Owego, tucked along the Susquehanna River, is arguably one of the prettiest of the Finger Lakes. Its downtown, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is lined with Victorian-era buildings that are just oozing timeless charm. The Tioga County Historical Society Museum features exhibitions on Native American heritage and the community's industrial origins. Hiawatha Island, situated just off Owego, had once served as a home to Native American tribes and as a steamboat landing. Owego Riverwalk meanders its way along the peaceful pathway running along the banks of the Susquehanna River. A stay at The Belva Lockwood Inn, a historic B&B hotel, is also a must for visitors to this area.

Palmyra

Sometimes billed as the birthplace of the Mormon religion, Palmyra has plenty of historic attractions. Take a tour of the Historic Palmyra Museums to gain perspective on its former role as an Erie Canal center and its religious heritage. One can't miss the Book of Mormon Publication Site, which is a religious, historical aspect representing where Joseph Smith's revelations were first printed. The other place to pay attention to is Erie Canal Lock 29, which is the preserved lock of the original canal. More so, only at Alling Coverlet Museum does one find a museum in America devoted to American coverlets, and thus, a look through the textiles of the 19th century is uniquely presented. To get a glimpse of the local flavor, head to the Palmyra Farmer's Market for local produce, crafts made by hand, and live music.
