7 Prettiest Downtown Strips In The Southern United States

If the Southern United States had to be defined by only one word, it would be multifaceted. The diverse cultures and histories that have occupied this region over the centuries have left an indelible mark on the small towns that make up its landscape, from the coast to the mountains. Their blend of Southern charm, hospitable communities, and cultural impact unites these seven downtown areas, bridging the present with the past.

Small towns are often characterized by their downtown districts, which are glued together by vintage storefronts housing modern comforts, from inns to coffee shops. From a city so quintessentially Southern that it became the set of a Hollywood blockbuster to another that symbolizes the very definition of Americana, these downtown strips are among the prettiest in the Southern U.S.

Seaside, Florida

Seaside, on Florida's Emerald Coast, is a planned community famous for its New Urbanist architecture and downtown area. The compact district is a haven for shoppers and foodies, framed by sophisticated boutiques like Brothers and Mended and landmarks like Sundog Books. This beautiful Southern region is known for fresh seafood and gorgeous sunsets; Seaside is no exception.

Many restaurants offer outdoor dining so guests can revel in the salt-tinged air and watch the pedestrians stroll by. But sunsets are reserved for Bud and Alley's Waterfront Restaurant. Locals and visitors gather at sundown on the Rooftop Bar to celebrate another day in paradise with the clanging of a vintage bell.

Natchitoches is a stunning town characterized by its downtown Queen Anne and Victorian architecture. It is so quintessentially Southern that the blockbuster "Steel Magnolias" was filmed here. The house where most of the movie took place was built in the 1830s and is now a charming bed and breakfast. The historic downtown area greets pedestrians with cobblestone streets, horse and carriage rides, and unforgettable structures that feel like another era.

Attractions include the elegant Beau Jardin, a waterfront park and manicured garden, and Fort St. Jean Baptiste, a replica of an early French fort that honors the French Canadians who settled the town with live exhibits and reconstructed buildings. Sports fans should not miss the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, another interesting layer that makes this one of the best downtown areas in the South.

Dahlonega, Georgia, is distinctively Americana, with a walkable downtown featuring classic storefronts and a pleasant community atmosphere. Its historic downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a Main Street community for its vintage structures and a town square that rose to prominence during Georgia's Gold Rush. This history and others can be examined at the Crisson Gold Mine and the Dahlonega Gold Museum.

Another endearing venue is Sips at Bleu, an artisan wine bar in the Bleu Gallery that celebrates art, wine, and friends. While on Public Square, stop at one of the many restaurants, like Bourbon Street Grille, to immerse yourself in the downtown way of life.

Natchez, Mississippi

Historic Natchez is the oldest city in Mississippi, and much of its history has been preserved. French colonists settled it, and elements of this culture are still evident, especially in the downtown district. Starting a walking tour at Bluff Park is an ideal way to experience the downtown strip. Stop at Visit Natchez on Main Street for more information on significant sites.

Prominent sites include Choctaw Hall and Beulah Baptist Church. The hall was built in 1836 and contains Greek Revival and Federal architectural styles, complete with double porches and regal white columns. The brick church has a significant Civil Rights history and was the site of the Parchman Ordeal arrests in 1965. This district is pleasing to the eye, but its historical significance on many fronts has endured, making it one of the best districts in the South.

Eufaula's historic downtown district is a Main Street Alabama community because of its throwback appeal, brick storefronts, and preservation efforts. The district offers diverse browsing experiences, from the kitschy Cotton and Kudzu to Theresa Fisher Studio, where you will find a range of artwork inspired by the local area.

Historic homes are everywhere in Eufala, including the historic downtown. Eufaula Avenue is home to the landmark Shorter Mansion, which was built in 1884 and contains period pieces, including furniture, and is available for public tours. Restaurants like Thelma's Kitchen and Cajun Corner on Broad add to Eufaula's appeal, perfect for fueling up before your walking tour downtown or for a relaxing lunch.

The Cultural District is a six-block area filled with local merchants and Southern hospitality at places like Books on Broad. It is known for its decor, such as exposed bricks, chandeliers, and classic wood floors, as much as it is for its collection of books. For art lovers, the district includes Rutledge Street Gallery, Gallery 537, and Artist's Attic.

Public murals add a distinctive character, including the beautiful collection of butterflies painted on a brick surface and others popping up throughout town. Cultural attractions include the Camden Archives & Museum on Broad Street. The Federalist-style building houses artifacts and exhibits showcasing Native American, genealogical, and regional histories that interpret the collective uniqueness of Camden and Kershaw County.

Named after Benjamin Franklin, Franklin, Tennessee, is known for many things and is considered "America's Favorite Main Street District." The extraordinary district has boutiques, historic homes, and unique finds. Landmarks include the Carter House and Carnton, and historic downtown structures are open for daily tours. Another must-see structure is the Franklin Grove Estate & Gardens in the heart of downtown.

The estate and magnificent brick Perkins-Winstead Mansion are currently being repurposed into the Robert N. Moore Museum of Art. The museum will curate the artistic works of local and national artisans with a rotating display of paintings, photography, sculpture, artifacts, and furniture exhibitions. An immersive way to explore this phenomenal area is by taking a Franklin on Foot tour. The leisurely tour allows guests to take their time and absorb the incredible history here, with guides educating them on the significance of this cultural region.

The Heart of the South

Its eclectic blend of culture and history makes it hard to demarcate what makes the Southern region so distinctive. Visiting any of these downtown areas (or all) gives a satisfying answer. From deliberately undisturbed historical sites to elegant, modern conveniences, these seven towns are linked by charm, beauty, and a cordial atmosphere that promises a memorable visit.

One does not have to look far in most of these towns to see the influences of many different periods highlighted in a most pleasant mural of culture. From planned communities to historic mountain villages, these destinations are united by an aesthetic that can only be called Southern. It isn't just the scenic backdrops bordering the cities but also the congenial communities welcoming visitors with warm smiles that make them so attractive.
