Nestled along the banks of the Missouri River, Clarksville boasts a rich history, including being named for famous Western explorer William Clark. The small downtown area is perfect for a walking tour, followed by a bit of antique shopping and lunch at a local spot such as Cherry’s Bar and Grill or Humphrey’s Coffee & Eats. After lunch, head to the nearby Riverfront Park, which is perfect for a leisurely stroll, often with bald eagles soaring over the Mississippi. Despite being only 75 miles from St. Louis, you will feel a world away as you relax and enjoy the scenery in Clarksville.

Another town within reach of a day trip from St. Louis, the tiny community of Weingarten, is a perfect escape when you are seeking unhurried serenity. Founded by German settlers in 1837, this picturesque community is known for its stunning rolling hills and sprawling vineyards. A visit to the local Weingarten Vineyard offers a chance to taste some of Missouri’s finest wines, while the peaceful ambiance makes it a perfect spot for a weekend getaway at the Inn at Weingarten. You can also take a short drive to another one of Missouri’s historic little towns, Ste. Genevieve.

Leiper's Fork, Tennessee

Leiper’s Fork is a tiny village that packs a big reputation for great live music. The nearby city of Franklin is a country music hotbed, and a healthy dose of that spirit spills over into this little village of only 650 residents. Make sure to catch a live performance at local music venues like Puckett’s, where you can see up-and-coming artists and well-known musicians alike. Known for its overall artistic spirit, Leiper’s Fork is dotted with art galleries and antique shops as well. The historic Fork Inn Retreat offers a cozy spot to rest, while the nearby Natchez Trace Parkway provides stunning views and hiking opportunities.

Cosby, Tennessee

Set along one of the main routes into the Great Smoky Mountains, Cosby is a nature lover’s paradise. Hiking trails, scenic views, and outdoor adventures await at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and the nearby Cosby Creek also offers great opportunities for fishing, swimming, and getting close to nature with a stay at the Cosby Creek Cabins. Cosby earned a reputation as the “Moonshine Capital of the World” during the Prohibition era of the 1920s, with locals producing illicit alcohol and transporting it throughout the region. Located along the banks of the Ouachita River with the Ouachita Mountains in view, Arkadelphia is rich in history and natural beauty. Downtown is home to several historic buildings in the Old Town area, and Arkadelphia’s architectural highlights include the county library and county courthouse. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the nearby Ouachita National Forest, which offers hiking, fishing, and breathtaking scenery. Self-proclaimed as the "Bourbon Capital of the World," Bardstown is a must-visit for whisky enthusiasts. Take a guided tour of the local distilleries to learn about the bourbon-making process and savor the chance to sample some of the finest bourbons around. Learn even more about bourbon at the Oscar Getz Museum of Whiskey History, and visit in early September for the annual Kentucky Bourbon Festival. In addition to bourbon, Bardstown is also known as the home of the beautiful and historic 1823 Basilica of St. Joseph, a testament to the spirit of the area’s early Roman Catholic setters.

Situated between the picturesque Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, Grand Rivers is named for the three major nearby rivers: the Ohio, Cumberland, and Tennessee. Known for its beautiful waterfront, the town offers boating, fishing, and recreational activities year-round. The nearby Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area provides endless opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and camping.
