South Dakota is a midwestern state, most revered for its gorgeous state parks, adventurous hiking trails, and breathtaking scenery. Sparsely populated, it is a wonderful place to escape and enjoy the beauty of the wide open spaces and great outdoors.

Dell Rapids

Dell Rapids brands itself one of the "most distinctive and colorful communities on the Dakota Plains." It earned its name from the rapids of the Big Sioux River, which flows nearby. Visitors will also find the Sioux River Red Rock Trail, which offers a scenic view of the Sioux Recreation Area.

While there are different hotels and inns in the area, camping along the side of the river boasts a more rustic, charming experience. The space is serene and relaxing, ideal for fishing, picnicking, swimming, and more. The campground is close to many different parks in the town, as well as the historic downtown area. There are many boutiques and restaurants, on top of distinct architecture of buildings such as the Grand Opera House of 1888.

Mitchell

Home to the world's only Corn Palace, Mitchell, South Dakota, is a unique town. The Corn Palace is the premier attraction, featuring corn murals, carnival rides, food and specialty vendors, and an annual festival every August. 

On top of the corny attraction, Mitchell offers other cultural and historic activities, including Cabela’s Wildlife Exhibits, Dakota Discovery Museum, and the Prehistoric Indian Village. Lake Mitchell, a man-made reservoir, also runs through the town, perfect for adventurous hikes, picnics, and days spent on the water.

Don't forget to check out the town's main street, which is chock full of restaurants, cafes, and boutiques. The walking tour is one of the best ways to take in all the charm of the town.

Wall

A town in Pennington County, South Dakota, Wall acts as an entrance to some of the most beautiful locations in the state. With only 800 residents, the town boasts an attractive community and millions of visitors each year.

The restaurants and cozy inns are warm and inviting, ideal for tourists looking to visit the nearby Badlands National Park, Mount Rushmore, and the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site. It is also a great place to return after a day full of sightseeing, offering a community park and lots of great spots to relax.

A hub for tourism, the town is also home to its now world-famous Wall Drug, which sells western-themed souvenirs, perfect for remembering the trip. There is also an 80-foot green dinosaur right off I-90, which is a great spot for a photo op and hilarious memory. 

Deadwood

Most well known for its gold rush history, Deadwood is a small town with a big history. Popular attractions include the 1880 Train, which explores the railroad history and the beauty of the Black Hills, as well as the Adams Museum, and the Broken Boot Gold Mine. For another chunk of interesting history, pay a visit to Mount Moriah Cemetery, the resting place of many Wild West figures, like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.

In the Black Hills area, Deadwood is a popular destination for anyone looking to get a taste of the great outdoors, alongside popular attractions such as the Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Devils Tower National Monument. Each month there are different concerts, parades, concerts, and more.

Chamberlain

Named after Milwaukee Railroad official Selah Chamberlain, the town of Chamberlain sits between Interstate 90 and the Missouri River. Boating, hunting, and fishing are popular activities in the area, and there are also walking trails situated along the river. Bring your binoculars and keep an eye out for some of the 14 bird species, as well as the breathtaking views along the river.

The town also houses the Akta Lakota Museum, which displays artifacts from the Sioux Indians. On top of that, the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center contains a detailed history of their travels along South Dakota. Along the town's main street, you'll find different antique stores, markets, and boutiques, ideal for a rainy afternoon or cozy weekend exploring.

Sturgis

Sturgis earned its name from Samuel D. Sturgis, a Union general during the Civil War. Sturgis is most memorable for hosting one of the largest motorcycle events in the world, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which occurs in August. It is home to vintage motorbikes and memorabilia, perfect for any motorcycling enthusiasts.

If you don't visit in time for the motorcycle rally, take a scenic drive through the winding roads, enjoying the beauty and charm of the town. Attend the Belle Joli Winery Sparkling House for refreshments, or the Iron House Saloon for a western-themed visit. There are lots of different inns and hotels to extend your stay, as well as popular restaurants and bars for fun nights out.

De Smet

A small town, De Smet is well known for its vibrant streets, friendly residents, and picturesque outdoor spaces. The hometown of Laura Ingalls Wilder, The Little House on the Prairie books capture the beauty and charm of De Smet. Pay a visit to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society to learn all about her life and view over 2000 artifacts.

The town has an endless string of events, including the Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant, concerts every Sunday, 50 theater performances a year, and more. Hunting, fishing, and camping are also popular activities, perfect for outdoor adventurers. Check out Rose Vincent Memorial Park for a Little House on the Prairie themed picnic, or visit Lake Thompson, South Dakota's largest lake, for bird-watching.

Vermillion

Vermillion sits along the Missouri River and the Vermillion River. Sioux City and Sioux Falls are within an hour's drive, though there are many popular activities including restaurants, move theaters, and cafes, which line the downtown streets.

Kayak or sail along the Missouri River or Lewis & Clark Lake, or check out the historic site of Spirit Mound Historic Prairie, a state park that is a prominent hill on the Great Plains. The National Music Museum is another stop you can't miss, world-renowned for its collection of instruments.
