The Sierra Nevada mountain region lies between the Central Valley and the Great Basin in California. The region rose to prominence during the Gold Rush of the 19th century and eventually became known as wine country. The small towns comprising the landscape are charming and maintain the 19th-century aesthetic. Many downtown areas are reminiscent of a Western movie, which adds to the town's ambiance.

Tahoe City is a beautiful town on the Lake Tahoe shore and the mouth of the Truckee River. Shopping in the town center is also a big draw, and there are cultural attractions like the Gatekeeper's Museum.

Historically, it was a railroad town, and mementos include naming the Railroad State Historic Park three miles south of town. Along with the charming downtown, there are plenty of outdoor activities like the Dragoon Gulch Trail. The canopied trail has 3.1 miles of hiking trails that are pleasant enough for a casual walker but are also ideal for a strenuous hike.

The courthouse was completed in 1898 after the original wooden structure fell into disuse.
