Within the Southeastern region of the United States lies the state of Mississippi. To the North of the state lies Tennessee, and Alabama sits due East. At 2.931 million residents, this is the 34th most populous state. On December 10, 1817, Mississippi became the 20th state admitted to the union. Today, the state is symbolic of southern charm and does a great job preserving its history. It is also the birthplace of many celebrity figures, such as reality TV partners Ben and Erin Napier. Agriculture is a significant industry in Arkansas as it accounts for 17.4% of the workforce in the state.

The following small towns prove why they are the top-rated locales in Mississippi. Visitors can examine the Civil War Historic battlegrounds in towns like Corinth and Vicksburg. There is also plenty of historic architecture to observe in towns like Natchez, such as Longwood Mansion.

Corinth

The town of Corinth sits in the Alcorn County region of Northeastern Mississippi. During the American Civil War, Corinth played a role of strategic importance. With its intersecting rail lines, the town was a strategic hub for both Union and Confederate soldiers. The year 1862 produced the battlefield for the Siege of Corinth and the second Battle of Corinth.

The Corinth Civil War Interpretive Centre is the place to see the setting of a major Civil War battleground. The large facility is home to several historical exhibits with plenty of stories to tell. Several outdoor exhibits sit on the museum's premises. The Stream of American History also sits on the outdoor premises. The monument memorializes the Constitution, as well as significant Civil War battles. During the war, the significance of Corinth was a result of its rail system. Intersecting downtown, the rail lines turned Corinth into a supply hub for both sides of the conflict. Today, the Crossroads Museum sits along those tracks. The Museum is home to plenty of history on the tracks. There is a vintage train caboose for visitors to take the perfect snapshot of a memory.  

Contraband Camps sprouted up as a result of the Emancipation Proclamation. Corinth was home to one of these locations. Thousands of former slaves passed through the camp, escaping their old lives. Today, the camp is a historic memorial. Life-sized bronzed statues dedicated to former slaves who fled for freedom stand today. In the year 1907, businessmen Avon Weaver and Mr. C.C Clark, purchased his own Coca-Cola franchise. From its simple birth, the franchise expanded to six facilities, serving plenty. The memorabilia of this history sits in the Corinth Coca-Cola Museum. The Generals' Quarters Inn provides a luxurious stay during a visit to Corinth. Bought in 1872, this establishment is one of the oldest hotels in the region. With six designer suites, guests receive the perfect place to rest and recharge. 

Natchez

In the Southwest corner of Adams County, Mississippi, is the town of Natchez. Located along the Mississippi River, Natchez sits a 90-mile drive from the city of Jackson. Upon entry into the American Union, Natchez became the first Capital of Mississippi.

Longwood Mansion is a historic landmark in Natchez. Built during the Antebellum era, Longwood is the Largest Octagonal mansion in America. Construction began in 1859, headed by Philadelphia Architect Samuel Sloan. Sloan is one of America's most prolific draftsman of architecture. The building of the mansion halted in 1861 as the fighting from the Civil War intensified in the area. Construction ultimately would never get completed. The land was listed as a historical site in 1969. The Towers of Natchez is one of several pieces of a bygone era architecture. Construction has occurred for several decades of history. The building had architectural influences from NeoClassical, West Indies, and Italian Villa Renaissance. It would serve as a local Federal headquarters during the Civil War. 1927 was a defining year for the towers, as a fire destroyed one of the structures. Today, due to restoration efforts, the structure once again stands tall. There are three tours for visitors, one being the Jeweled Christmas tour.

On March 14, 1908, tragedy struck Natchez around 2:00 in the afternoon. A gas leak resulted in a downtown explosion, destroying the Local Drug Company. The owner would buy a monument in commemoration of five of the victims who worked at his store. Today, that monument still stands tall to all as cars drive by. In the year 1979, Mary Lee Davis-Toles began collecting local African American History. They did so with the intent of preserving the legacy of past contributions to the American story. For over 30 years, the Museum has told the story of African Americans from slavery, past the Civil Rights era, to modern times.

Pass Christian beaches provide the perfect outdoor escape. The sand is amongst the softest on the coastal shoreline. Amenities featured are space for sunbathing, picnic areas, and food vendors. The town is also known for its quality seafood cuisine. Bacchus on the Beach has served citizens for over a decade. Known for its fresh seafood, the menu includes its delicious fried shrimp. The Kimball Family has also served as a seafood distributor since 1930. At its height, the family had 80 boats bringing in seafood for its patrons. 

The Pass Christian Yacht Club was first organized on July 21, 1849. Each time, the community would overcome and rebuild. Today, the Yacht Club is a breathtaking 10,000-square-foot clubhouse. Adjoining functions include a large restaurant, a panoramic view of the water, and a pool. Pass Christian's scenic drive showcases the elegance of the town. A drive takes people past the historic architecture and elegant mansions. Amidst the oak trees, drives will spot the historic Raffery Building. Vicksburg

Vicksburg, Mississippi, sits 40 miles to the west of Jackson City in the Warren County region. The town is the setting of vital events in the American Story. 

In 1863, one of the most pivotal battles of the Civil War occurred in Vicksburg. The Union victory helped entrench its foothold of control in the Mississippi River. Today, the grounds are well preserved as a field of the dead. The site features more than 1,300 historic monuments and markers, along with 17,000 graves from the war. Vicksburg has a unique chapter to play in the story of Coca-Cola. The Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum is the first place where Coca-Cola was bottled. It was a revolutionary idea, coming from the mind of Joe Biedenarn, owner of a local candy store. Today, the local Museum is a place of history. It preserves historic memorabilia and demonstrates the original bottling process.  

The Vicksburg Old Courthouse is a big piece of the story of the town. It was here, that Jefferson Davis first began his political journey. After several decades of damages, it was more years of neglect that led to the creation of a new courthouse. Today the original grounds preserve the cultural history, with exhibits and memorabilia. On April 12, 2002, Vicksburg presented one piece of the Riverfront Mural Project. These murals were the vision of artist Robert Dafford. The purpose of the project was to present the role of the town in the American story. Noted local Artist Martha Ferris had her artwork first portrayed to the public a year prior.  The Riverfront Hotel is the perfect place to stay while in Vicksburg. The town of Flowood sits in the Rankin County region of Mississippi. It is an attractive city and one of the fastest growing in the entire state. 

Winners Circle Park is a fun recreational experience for young children. With playground equipment and a local amphitheater, there are plenty of available activities. Another fun place in Flowood is DEFY Jackson. This establishment is an extreme trampoline park with plenty of spectacular activities. It is the perfect day to have fun and test the limits of young patrons. 

The Annual Flowood Family Festival Brings the local community together. The festival features Music, Food, and games. It is a memorable experience for all who attend. Flowood Nature Park is a 40-acre scenic experience. The trees and plants in the forest area serve as unique educational opportunities. Laurel, Mississippi, is in the southeastern part of the state, along Tallahala Creek. The history of this locale dates back to 1882, beginning as a lumber town. 

Reality Television has had a positive impact on Laurel. In the recent decade, a group of residents committed to revitalizing the town. Amongst that group were partners Ben and Erin Napier. Since 2016, the couple has been giving local architecture a distinctly modern aesthetic. Their efforts have produced seven seasons of the hit HGTV series 'Home Town." Laurel Mercantile Co. has been one of the headquarters for Erin and Ben's local revitalization project. The store satisfies the aesthetic needs of the homeowner. They can buy candles or a charcuterie board. 

The perfect place to book lodging accommodations in Laurel is Buzzards Roost Hotel. The hotel was recently featured in an episode of Home Town, where Ben and Erin worked on the upstairs of the hotel. Following the episode, the pair also helped with the development of the Bar. The hotel has five available rooms, each with its unique presentation as a stop on the Crescent Line train. Veteran's Memorial Museum supports the legacy of soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. Visitors can walk past the exhibits and memorabilia donated through the years. A recent addition is a piece from the USS Arizona Relics Program. This piece was featured on an episode of "Home Town: Ben's Workshop." 

The Lauren Rodgers Museum houses an extensive, diverse collection of artwork. The adjoining library consists of 10,000 volumes of research material on Art history. The Museum is a symbol to honor the life of young Lauren Rogers. One of the children of Laurel's founding families, Rogers met his demise as a young man. Artists from Bierstadt to Blakelock are amongst many whose paintings are featured in these exhibits. 

Ocean Springs

Oceans Springs is a lovely coastal town situated in Jackson County, Mississippi. Ocean Springs is effective at connecting to its scenic ambiance and colonial roots. Established as a French Colony in 1699, the City came under the control of the Americans by 1811. The town is a growing hub for business and commercial opportunities.

The Roost Hotel is a lovely scenic experience in Ocean Springs. With an outdoor pool and an adjoining restaurant, the Roost creates the perfect getaway. The hotel's defining feature is the oak trees that surround its premises. The Walter Anderson Museum of Art first opened in 1991. Its purpose was to honor the legacy of the regional artist Walter Inglis Anderson. His unique creations helped make him one of the most prolific artists of the 20th century. To Anderson, his artwork was a way to understand the world. Decades later, his vision is on display for all to gaze upon.

There are many ways to spend a lovely day in the Davis Bayou Area. The region provides many amenities, from miles of walking trails to picnic areas. There is also space to get out on the water and enjoy a day of canoeing or kayaking. With beautiful scenery and a peaceful essence, it is the perfect place for a day outdoors. The Mississippi Vietnam Veteran Memorial Centre is a tribute to local Heroes of war. A trip here takes visitors along a trail of plaques awarded to state Medal of Honor winners. Also found on the site is a memorial to the USS Tullibee. This WW2 submarine's tragic demise led to the death of 52 sailors, each memorialized in the center. Also located on the site is the main mast of the USS Mississippi CGN-40. 

The Crooked Feather Sculpture is a 30-foot-tall statue built by Peter Wolf Toth in 1976. This creation is a part of his collection titled "Trail of Whispering Giants." The purpose is to honor the history of Native Americans.

Bay St. Louis

Seated in Hancock County, Mississippi, is the town of Bay St. Louis. In 2005, the town was forced to overcome the most terrible of tragedies during Hurricane Katrina. Today, following decades of tricky repairs, the community presents its charm to the world, from the charm of the community to the lovely coastal setting. 

The Pearl Hotel is a luxurious palace. It has a history that dates back to the 1950s. There are over 50 rooms on the premises, along with an event space and courtyard. On the ground floor, visitors have their options in regards to dining. There is the Seafood restaurant Thorny Oyster and a cocktail lounge called Hinge. The Alice Mosely Folk Art Museum is a memorial to the noteworthy artist. Mosely had a fascinating painting career, as she first took up the activity in the 1960s. Following her mother's death, Mosely began taking her artwork to shows. In her 80s, Mosely arrived in Bay St. Louis and fell in love. She would spend the rest of her life capturing the natural essence of the area in her later artwork. Today, many of her creations hang in the museum for the public to gaze upon.

The Bay St. Louis Mardi Gras Museum is found in the historic train depot. Inside the museum is a collection of themed costumes, each created by the local Carter Church. The Mystic Ghost Ride Company provides unforgettable tours of Bay St. Louis. All tours begin at the No-Name Marina and take visitors on a journey bringing to life the historic local tales. For example, visitors who book the Voodoo Love Boat Tour learn the story of pirate Jean Lafitte. 

These small towns are the most must-see in Mississippi.  The towns of Vicksburg and Corinth do a fantastic job preserving their local history.
