For a European escape without the high cost of flying, the Georgia town of Helen transports its visitors to the pages of a German fairytale. After its logging industry all but vanished, this Appalachian Mountain town shifted gears in the 1960s, transforming into a Bavarian-style village. The pivot worked wonders, reinventing Helen into an adorable tourist town known for its German attractions, festivals, and natural splendor.

Exposed timber framing and pitched roofs give the town its Bavarian style, evoking a storybook feel. The European charm also extends indoors, with German-themed restaurants and gift shops like Hofbrauhaus Restaurant and Lindenhaus Imports. For cultural fun at its liveliest, September 6th, 2025, will mark the beginning of Helen’s famous Oktoberfest celebrations with a downtown parade. Alternatively, nature lovers may prefer a secluded hike through Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest for views of Anna Ruby Falls, an enchanting double waterfall.

Perched on the shores of Cayuga Lake in New York State, Ithaca is another town known for its enchanting waterfall scenes. The Finger Lakes town is surrounded by over 150 waterfalls and countless gorges, earning it the tagline "Ithaca is gorges.” Not far from downtown, visitors can stroll the border of Cayuga Lake to take in views of Ithaca Falls, a stunning 150-foot cascade. For a refreshing swim with waterfall views, Buttermilk Falls State Park is a great alternative, featuring a larger cascade with a swimming hole at its base.

Seasonal swimming can also be enjoyed at Taughannock Falls State Park, home to the tallest waterfall in the region. A manageable drive from downtown Ithaca, Taughannock Falls plunges a whopping 215 feet, making it taller than Niagara Falls. The Gorge Trail guides hikers to the bottom of the waterfall, offering picturesque views of the 400-foot sandstone and limestone surrounding it. After working up a sweat hiking to the falls, guests can also swim in Cayuga Lake or enjoy a scenic picnic along its shore.

Fall is also an ideal time to drive Ouray’s section of the Million Dollar Highway, a scenic road trip route known for its golden aspens. Once snowfall blankets the region, Ouray then transforms into a winter wonderland, drawing adventurous climbers to Ouray Ice Park.
