When one thinks of a college town, it invokes a sense of community, culture, and a pursuit of higher knowledge. There are many college towns In Missouri, but some do shine more than others, earning them the title of the best of the best. These towns are known for their vibrant nightlife, delicious coffee shops, beautiful art, and a variety of both natural and man-made wonders to explore.

When it comes to college towns in Missouri, none can come close to St. Louis in the sheer volume of higher learning institutes. With nearly 50 different colleges and universities, St. Louis makes up roughly a third of all the campuses in the entire state. With big names like Washington University and Webster University, along with points of interest like the world-famous Gateway Arch and the natural playground of Castlewood State Park, it is no wonder that so many call it home, even if just for the duration of their college experience. St. Louis also has a vibrant nightlife, lots of activities, and an ever-changing artistic and cultural environment that secures its place on this list.

Kansas City

While there are not as many colleges in Kansas City as there are in other places around Missouri, it does boast the largest population. Being the home of the University of Missouri-Kansas City and Rockhurst University and straddling the Kansas-Missouri border, the city is unique in both its culture and people and provides a diverse community that is forever fluctuating and changing. There is always something to do here, and there are many famous and popular sights to see and explore, ranging from sporting events to interactive art galleries. The nightlife never stops, with parties and events every day of the year, and the environment has created a hub for small businesses and local breweries.

Fulton

Fulton is a charming and historical town offering the local students a change from the usual busy atmosphere in larger college towns. Though small, the town has a big heart and a passion for education and advancement, hosting Westminster College and William Woods University. They pride themselves on their trendy dining options, quaint shops, and access to a variety of big-city amenities that are not usually found in a small-town location. Sitting a mere 25 miles to the north and east of two larger cities, including the state capital, Jefferson City, Fulton provides unique access to even more things to do and see. Nestled among rolling hills and many rivers and streams, it is also a great location for hiking, fishing, and other outdoor adventures.

If someone is looking for the perfect blend between small-town hospitality and big-city adventures, they need not look further than Warrensburg, home of the University of Central Missouri. Not only did they rank on safety, but they also have a treasure trove of things to do and see there. From thriving nightlife to beautiful parks, this town has it all, and more. Whether it is a college student or a resident, there is a never-ending list of things to do, see, and experience, whether shopping downtown or hiking in the woods. With a bustling art community, they host many festivals and theater productions, making for something new and interesting to do all year long.

Columbia

Located near the magnificent Ozarks, Columbia is home to amazing views, plenty of parks and lakes, and a bustling community of locals, students, and tourists throughout the year. Situated between St. Louis and Kansas City, Columbia excels at combining the low-cost, small-town lifestyle with the thrills of the big city. Home to Rock Bridge State Park and several nationally-recognized schools, notably the University of Missouri and Columbia College, this is the city that has been named many times as one of the best places to live in the United States. With lots of restaurants and entertainment options, there are always new places to go and lots to be a part of.

Joplin

Out of all the college towns in Missouri, Joplin, the site of Missouri Southern State University, is perhaps one of the most vibrant. Featuring more than 200 restaurants, a passion for the arts, and the beauty of the Ozarks, there is always something wonderful to experience in this city. Its historical roots range from a stop on Route 66 to being the birthplace of poet Langston Hughes, and it has also been a hometown of several actors, inspiration for writers and musicians, and many other stories to tell. With around 11 colleges and universities in the area, it has become a place filled with life, passion, and the pursuit of knowledge.

Maryville

Maryville leads the way when it comes to great strides in innovation and eco-friendly practices. The prairie town is home to several large colleges, among which Northwest Missouri State University is the most prominent, and around 6,000 students study in the town every year. The town is rich in both history and entertainment, dedicating much of its space to parks, shops, restaurants, and recreation areas. The nearby lake is perfect for fishing and boating, and they have an award-winning golf course, which boasts a golf course designed by Tom Watson, a legendary golfer. The local winery and Missouri's collection of bars and pubs give the town a wonderful night scene, that while quaint, is still full of fun and passion.

St. Charles

Along the Missouri River, northwest of St. Louis, lies the town of St. Charles, home of Lindenwood University. This town near the water is full of life, with its own casino, wineries, and festive nightlife. There are always live events and festivals happening, celebrating their rich history and culture as a trading post city in early America. Restaurants feature various cuisine offerings while the local shops provide friendly and warm atmospheres. With several museums and attractions, both indoors and out, there is always something new to discover here. St. Charles has entered the modern era strongly, with lots of virtual access to the city. Whether visitors want to hike some trails in Platte Landing Park or get some selfies at Photo Op Alley, there are many amazing things to take in at Parkville. This college town is home to Park University and is known for its historic downtown and its beautiful art galleries. With natural beauty like in the Parkville Nature Sanctuary and man-made entertainment areas like the Parkville Mini Golf course, there are many options to explore and have fun. There are several artisanal coffee shops and wineries in town as well, making sure that whether it is a guest or a new addition to the population, all have plenty of drinks and interesting places to hang out. 

Rolla

Home of Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla may be small but has a lot to offer students, locals, and visitors alike. With several colleges calling this city home, the town has become a lively place, with many local businesses and a thriving farmer's Market. Nestled in the Ozarks Highlands, the city is surrounded by beautiful scenery, like rolling hills, natural springs, and tranquil rivers. Given its central location in the state of Missouri, getting to other cities is relatively easy. Following their passion for the arts, the town holds annual concerts, exhibitions, and other art and music events. Antiquers and history enthusiasts will also love this city, as it provides many venues and chances to pursue those hobbies.
