Brief History Of Conesus

Conesus was initially home to Native American tribes, specifically the Seneca people, who lived in a village around Conesus Lake. European settlers began arriving in the area around 1793 and built many pioneer settlements where most did farming for a living. The town was created in 1819 from land in the two towns of Livonia and Groveland. Conesus was given its name in 1825, but prior it was referred to as “Freeport” and then “Bowersville.” Some historical places in Conesus on the United States National Register of Historic Places are the Kellerman Log Cabin which is a log home from one of the town’s earliest settlements, and the Conesus Amusement Hall, which is a community center that was built in 1888.

It is a water source to Geneseo and Avon and has residential properties apart from the town of Conesus on its shoreline. The lake's name comes from the Seneca people who lived on the lake's shoreline and meant "always beautiful." Conesus Lake is known for its abundance of fish species, such as the largemouth bass, walleye, tiger muskie, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, and northern pike fish. During the summers, fishing, boating, cycling, and swimming are popular at the lake, while ice fishing, skating, and snowmobiling are favored in winter.
