Opening the list of the best Illinois towns to visit this season is Carbondale, a city that makes almost every list of the best nature-centric destinations in Illinois. Carbondale leads the list as it is enhanced by waterbodies that complement its foliage, like Campus Lake and the Carbondale Reservoir in Evergreen Park. The fascinating fall atmospheres are attributed to its colorful trees, including the Sugar Maple, White Oak, Hackberry, and Northern Red Oak Trees, with some of its most vibrant states being the last few weeks of October. Adventurists can venture out to Castle Park with family or explore more challenging nature routes like the Green Earth's Fernlands Nature Preserve, boasting wooden bridges, narrow paths, and more.

Grafton

Alton also sits along the Mississippi River and shares one of the most scenic routes on Highway 100 with its neighboring town of Grafton. It’s believed that the abundance of limestone and water in the area keeps attracting ghosts to the site, with one of the most haunted destinations in the area being the Mc-Pike mansion, home to one of Alton’s old mayors. Morris

Morris is a town surrounded by greenery and one of the best family-friendly fall leaf-peeping destinations on this list. The town is part of the Southwest Chicago Metropolitan Area and takes pride in its fall beauty with events like the Grundy County Fall Festival and the downtown Halloween Trunk Or Treat Power Wheel Races. For those who can’t find the time to drive out of the big city to embrace the scenic routes of Alto and Grafton, Morris is just a one-hour drive from Chicago and stands out with multiple picnicking destinations and family-friendly parks like Chapin Park and West Side Park. The Seat of Grundy County enjoys a welcoming, tight-knit community, allowing visitors to experience small-town charm without venturing too far out of the city. Galena
