In a town named Valentine, it may come as no surprise that visitors from across the country are drawn there to celebrate many of the themed events held around Valentine’s Day, including having cards and letters stamped postmarks and sent by regular mail. This romantic town has a charming main street with several landmarks like the old post office and bank building, shops like Janine’s Flower Exchange, the Bolo Beer Co., and George Paul Vinegar, and historic buildings like the Valentine Railroad Depot and Centennial Hall Museum, originally built in 1897 as a high school and rumored to be haunted. The museum has twelve rooms, each with a different theme, including the Hallock Bell collection with over 1,700 bells, the Days of Yesteryear room, the Military room, and more.

Valentine is the gateway to the Niobrara National Scenic River, attracting visitors year-round. Many visitors come to the town of Valentine to float the 76-mile stretch of river by canoe, tube, kayak, or raft. At Smith Falls State Park, visitors can hike along the river to Nebraska's tallest waterfall, Smith Falls, or drive to the nearby Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge to see bison, elk, and prairie dogs.

Thanks to its most famous former resident, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Willa Cather, Red Cloud’s main street is a tribute to the sites important to Willa Cather’s life and writing. Take a self-guided walking tour of Red Cloud to see historic buildings and landmarks associated with Willa Cather and the town's history. The tour includes stops at her 1859-built childhood home and National Historic Landmark, where her bedroom is still papered in the wallpaper she chose as a teenager, the Burlington Depot, the Grace Episcopal Church, the Red Cloud Opera House, and the J. L. Milner House—home of her childhood friends.

Explore charming shops like the Corner Nook bookstore + café, Abundant Life Honey, and dine in restaurants like Fat Fox’s and the Hometown Market in Red Cloud’s downtown area. Five miles south of Red Cloud, visit the Willa Cather Memorial Prairie, which preserves 612 acres of never-plowed native prairie as it was during Cather’s time. Minden

Welcome to "Nebraska's Christmas City," Minden, whose lively main street is particularly festive during the holiday season when the Courthouse Square is adorned with Christmas lights. Minden’s “Light of the World” Christmas pageant has been a tradition for over 60 years and continues this year on November 29, 2024. The performance culminates in lighting over 10,000 Christmas lights around the square. The square is surrounded by historic buildings, like the Kearney County Historical Museum and the Minden Opera House, constructed in 1891 and renovated in 2000; it serves as the community’s cultural hub.

For history buffs and lovers of Americana, the Harold Warp Pioneer Village is a must-visit. The museum complex showcases American history and innovation from the 1830s to now. It features over 50,000 artifacts across 28 buildings, including airplanes, farm equipment, and historical exhibits. See the world’s oldest Buick, a 1902 Cadillac, a 1903 Ford, and 350 other antique cars displayed.

Alliance

The iconic City Park Fountain in downtown Alliance is the town’s pride and joy, so much so the fountain is part of the Alliance logo. Alliance’s downtown main street is in and around Box Butte Avenue, a busy brick-lined street with various unique shops, cafés like Vintage, and art installations like Carhenge, a replica of England's Stonehenge, made entirely out of vintage American cars. It’s an iconic roadside attraction and an excellent spot for quirky photos.

The Carnegie Arts Center provides residents with opportunities for cultural expression and exposure to the visual, performing, and literary arts in Alliance and a few surrounding towns. The Knight Museum and Sandhills Center is an innovative historical museum that examines five areas of local history: Life in the Sandhills, Native American Life, Life in the Country, Life in the Town, and The Railroad. Like Alliance, Chadron is another Nebraska town in the Nebraska Panhandle. This small college town’s vibrant downtown is home to more than a few coffee shops like Just Love Coffee Cafe, Bean Broker Coffee House & Pub, and Scooter’s Coffee. Explore the campus of Chadron State College and see the historic Old Admin Building, built in 1916 and still an iconic symbol of the college today. Visit the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center, which honors the life and work of author Mari Sandoz, whose writing was rooted in the landscape and culture of the Great Plains.

Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy spending time in Nebraska’s oldest state park, Chadron State Park, tucked among the distinctive buttes and canyons of Nebraska’s Pine Ridge. It is a popular spot for tent camping or renting one of the 22 available cabins, hiking or biking on over 100 miles of trails and old roads, suitable for different levels of experience, horseback riding, and fishing for rainbow trout in Chadron Creek. For an otherworldly experience near Chadron, drive 40 miles northwest to Toadstool Geologic Park—famous for its moon-like rock formations that resemble toadstools.

Nebraska City is one of the oldest cities in the state, and its downtown area is full of historic buildings. Dinty Moore’s Bar, established in 1906, has been a Nebraska City landmark for over 100 years. The town is known for its rich history, particularly its location along the Missouri River, a significant route for the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center features interactive exhibits, a theater, and a viewing deck with panoramic river views.
