Pella is an accessible day trip or weekend escape for the city dwellers, only forty miles southeast of Des Moines. The town's name, which means "City of Refuge," was founded in 1847 by a defecting group of immigrants from Holland who sought freedom from religious oppression. While the community evolved with the times, growing and making room for modern amenities, it still celebrates much of the old Dutch look in its structures, festivals, and customs. Many of Pella’s visitors say they feel as though they have visited a small European village, with its smiling people, the celebrations of tulips, and the city’s windmill.

One of the biggest draws to this outlying community miles away from the booming metropolis of Des Moines is its connection with nature. To this point, one of its greatest attractions, and a Mecca for a weekend getaway for city dwellers, is Lake Red Rock. Here, water recreation abounds in the form of boating and fishing. There are also miles of trail systems, weaving through nature and allowing for stunning woodland views and lakeside shots perfect for any photographer’s portfolio.

For those preferring less grandeur than you find at the lake, nature is still beautifully displayed in Pella’s downtown treasure, Central Park. The space provides a charming community gathering place beyond its well-manicured appearance and walking paths. Surrounded by historic buildings and blooming tulip gardens during spring, it is a fine place to sit for a leisurely walk or picnic with family or friends.

Pella's Dutch heritage comes alive with many festivals and events. The Tulip Time Festival in May is the most beautiful and popular. For that three-day festivity, the town changes into a vibrant tapestry of color as thousands of tulips bloom. Authentic Dutch dances, parades, and crafts introduce thousands to this rich heritage every spring. You can wander through the Dutch market, taste genuine traditional dishes, and be surrounded by charming and friendly locals.

In the winter, Pella's festive spirit shines again with the Kerstdagen Festival, a holiday celebration that highlights the magic of the Christmas season. It makes the downtown area aglow with twinkling lights and holiday decorations, carriage rides, caroling, and a very European-style Christmas market. The market has a wealth of locally crafted, unique gifts to make a memorable present for a special someone on your list.

It is said that the average human exists in three unique spaces: home, workplace, and designated community spaces provided by their municipality. Pella's parks and spaces reflect a commitment to fostering a sense of belonging for all. West Market Park remains a favorite among families with its green open spaces and modern playgrounds. The park’s picnic shelters and open spaces are just right for any gathering. Then, of course, families also adore Caldwell Park for its aquatic center, sports courts, and skate park, which promises something for everyone.
