Flags, Symbols & Currency of Turks and Caicos

The Flag of Turks and Caicos Islands was officially adopted on November 7, 1968.

The Flag of Turks and Caicos Islands features a blue background with the flag of the United Kingdom (Union Jack) in the upper hoist-side quadrant and the colonial shield centered on the outer half of the flag. The shield is yellow and displays a conch shell, a spiny lobster, and Turk's cap cactus - three common elements representing the islands' biota. The flag has a width-to-length proportion ratio of 1:2.

History of the Flag

The first flag of the Turks and Caicos Islands followed a similar design, but the colonial seal was a bit different than the modern one. This seal depicted a ship that sailed past a man, who was working to extract the sea salt. This flag was first flown in 1875 and was used till 1889. In 1889, the salt piles on the seal were slightly modified and this flag design was used without any further changes till 1968. In 1968, the current flag of Turks and Caicos Islands was adopted.

The National Coat of Arms of Turks and Caicos Islands

The Coat of Arms of Turks and Caicos Islands was adopted in 1965. The yellow-colored shield displays a conch shell and a crayfish representing the local fishing industry, and a flowering cactus representing local flora. The shield is supported on its two sides by flamingos. The crest above the shield supports a pelican placed between two sisal plants – which represents the connection of the islands with the rope industry.

National Anthem

Being an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom, the official national anthem of Turks and Caicos Islands is "God, Save the Queen".

However, a local national song titled, "This Land of Ours" written and composed by Dr. Rev. Conrad Howell is also sung.

"This Land of Ours"

O we salute this land of ours

Our country we declare

This promise land with its beauties grand

Though small it is our own

Chorus:

Turks & Caicos, Turks & Caicos

Our country firm and free

Our allegiance Turks & Caicos

We pledge and we affirm.

Our people forged and blend

With multiplicity

Of race and kind and creed and tongue

United by our goals

From the east, west, north and south

Our banks and oceans meet

Surrounding sands and hills of glee

Our pristine beauties see

Chorus:

Turks & Caicos, Turks & Caicos

Our country firm and free

Our allegiance Turks & Caicos

We pledge and we affirm.

We stand with courage brave

To Protect this land of ours

With Islands scattered here and there

With trust in God we stand
