The historic building housing the Brown and Hopkins Country Store dates back to 1799. The first general store opened there in 1809, and since then, 19 owners have taken up shop in this building. The most recent was in 2024, which is known today as the Brown and Hopkins Country Store, making it one of the oldest continuously operating general stores in America since 1809. The original penny candy counter can still be found in the store, along with vintage relics and antiques dating back to 1809. While the foundation may have stayed the same, the items being offered have been modernized. In 1893, C.R. Wilbur opened a small general store in Little Compton. This small store has stood the test of time. New owners took over Wilbur’s in 2019. But the story didn’t end there... after extensive renovations, the store reopened in 2025 under new ownership. Today, Summit General Store blends historic character with modern offerings, continuing its legacy as a rural mainstay.

A family-owned and operated business, this multi-functional store sells antiques, collectibles, and vintage and retro finds from over 70 dealers. The rustic farm building is reminiscent of an old-time general store. The old-fashioned sodas and penny candies send shoppers back in time as they peruse the mercantile. The story of how Ma and Pa’s Country Store got its name began with a happenstance visit by a traveling salesman. Back in the time around the store opening, salesmen and vendors would speak to employees who appeared to be the oldest, believing age equaled seniority. When one particular salesman approached young owners Wendy and Larry and asked to speak to their Ma and Pa, they knew they would name their general store after that. The family-owned business has sold homemade pies, sweets, and catering items for over 40 years. The store also sells specialty meats, serves deli items, and keeps the bakery full of goodies. The Black Dog General Store

Created from Captain Robert Douglas's love of the sea, his island home, and his dog, the Black Dog General Store was started in 1971.
