In August of 1961, Soviet troops in East Germany began to seal the border between East and West Berlin, constructing a wall that would become the symbol for the divide between ideological powers during the Cold War. The Berlin Wall was 12 feet high and 66 miles long as well as including an additional 40 miles of barbed wire fencing to deter people from crossing.
