There's so much more to Southern California than just crowded beaches, non-stop traffic, and celebrities. Tucked away from plain view are some small towns such as Ojai, Julian, and Avalon, where the pace slackens, but there is never a dull moment. Peace, tranquility, and serenity fuse together in these enchanting places, which usually go unnoticed compared to the larger metropolises of California. This article takes a more in-depth look at six chill towns that showcase SoCal's more mellow and agreeable side.

Ojai is laid-back in practice but is heaped with things to do for the busy body. Kick off your day at Bart's Books, the world's largest outdoor bookstore, where browsing in the sun is enough to make your day. Next, a visit to Libbey Park is in order, with concerts offered at the historic Libbey Bowl. A drive to Meditation Mount rewards with panoramic views of the Ojai Valley-beautiful and stunning in the sunset. Be sure not to miss a stop into the Ojai Olive Oil Company for a tour and tasting, and if quirky spots are up your alley, a stop into The Ojai Valley Museum teaches all about the town's cultural roots.

Idyllwild harmoniously merges art and nature. Afternoon explorations start at the Idyllwild Area Historical Society Museum, dedicated to the town's rich mountain heritage. Take in some gorgeous greenery by heading to the top of Tahquitz Rock or going on one of the many trails around the Idyllwild Nature Center. The more artsy people will also enjoy the Idyllwild Arts Academy, offering performances and art shows featuring local talent. More nature can be found an hour away at Lake Hemet or the peaceful walk around Foster Lake. Top off the day with a meal at Restaurant Gastrognome, a quintessential local restaurant that provides filling portions to hikers and residents alike.

Julian may be famous for its gold rush, but there's more to this little town than the epicenter of that era. Start with a guided tour of the Eagle and High Peak Mine to get some mining history, then grab a piece of pie or two at the Julian Pie Company before heading to the Julian Pioneer Museum. Hike the trails at Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve, or take a leisurely stroll around Jess Martin Park for some mountain air. Wine aficionados can taste a varietal or two at Menghini Winery, while beer fans should make for Julian Beer Company for a cold one in a historic building.

Solvang is all about equal parts Danish culture and SoCal sunshine. Kick things off with a visit to Old Mission Santa Inés, a lingering outpost from the town's Spanish colonial past. Next, experience some Danish culture at the Elverhøj Museum of History & Art, a museum combining local history with a flair for Scandinavia. Families will enjoy a stop at Hans Christian Andersen Park, where kids can have fun while castles in the Danish style watch over them. Wind down with a wine tasting at Rideau Vineyard or check out the unique yet very interesting collection of rare bikes at The Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum.
