Around 35 miles east of Atlanta is Covington. It is such a pretty town that it’s a popular filming location for movies such as The Dukes of Hazzard and In the Heat of the Night. If you want to take a tour of some of Covington’s popular filming locations, you can climb aboard the Mystic Falls Tours. The charming city trolley is a great way to experience the lovely atmosphere of the town while getting a rare glimpse of movie locations, like the filming location for Vampire Diaries, the Lockwood Mansion.

What makes Covington a great place to visit is all its fantastic restaurants. The Mystic Grill Restaurant, inspired by The Vampire Diaries, is more than just a fan-favorite eatery. It delivers some of the best Southern cuisine in the state with a lovely street-side cobblestone patio. When you want to take in the natural views of Covington, Chimney Park is a well-maintained greenspace (and former estate) with fitness trails that take you through lush Georgian greenery. It is also where you can catch seasonal events, like Twilights at Chimney Park, a Christmas-themed festival with hot apple cider, Christmas lights, and carolers.

Tucked away in the Southwest corner of the state outside of Tallahassee, Florida, is the delightful hamlet of Thomasville. One of the most notable attractions in Thomasville isn’t the manmade variety. Rather, it’s The Big Oak, a tree that is estimated to be almost 350 years old and is thought to be one of America’s oldest living oak trees. Located within Elizabeth Ireland Poe Park, it’s a great place to sit back and take in the once-in-a-lifetime view.

While catching a glimpse of The Big Oak is a must, there is so much to see and discover in this delightful little village. You can birdwatch at the Birdsong Nature Center or take a tour of its 1912 estate known as the Dickey-Komarek House. There is a myriad of stunning plantations in Thomasville open to tours, but few compare to the opulence of Lapham-Patterson House. Constructed in 1885, this Queen Anne-style mansion weaves the tale of Thomasville through intricate gardens and magnificent halls.

The village of Americus is truly a hidden gem. Far removed from the bustling cities of Georgia, this adorable small town is found in the rolling hills of the Piedmont Region. Everywhere you look, you will find historic buildings along its winding city streets. One of the best stops in Americus is the Rylander Theatre. It was built in 1921 and completely renovated to its former glory in 1999, and it is a fantastic place to catch a live show.

Even if you don’t plan on spending the night in Americus, you have to stop by the Windsor Hotel. You can grab a bite to eat at the Rosemary and Thyme Restaurant or order a mint julep from Floyd’s Pub to sip on the scenic veranda. And if you still want to wet your whistle after visiting the Windsor Hotel, Thirteenth Colony Distilleries is the only craft distillery in the state of Georgia. They offer unique tours and tastings of the massive 44,000-square-foot floor facility.

East of Atlanta is Madison, known for its historic antebellum architecture, historic homes, and lovely public gardens. To showcase Madison’s beauty, the Morgan County Historical Society offers a curated list of its most stunning homes for visitors to admire. Visitors can take guided (or self-guided) tours of sprawling estates like the Rogers House (c. 1809), Heritage Hall (c. 1811), or the Rose Cottage (c. 1891). These perfectly manicured gardens and restored century homes tell the tale of Madison in its early days.

After a day of admiring fantastic architecture, downtown Madison has plenty of restaurants serving up fantastic Southern cuisine. For good old-fashioned comfort food, there’s no better place for a stick-to-your-ribs meal than Benny Paul’s Soul Food. If you are in the mood for Georgian BBQ, Crowe’s Open-Air Bar-B-Que has some of the best-smoked meats in the state!

In the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains is where you will find Helen, a unique Bavarian village. Walking the cobblestone streets with vibrant Bavarian buildings feels less like a small southern city and more like a Bavarian retreat. Helen may be small (it’s only about two square miles in size), but the best surprises often come in small packages. It boasts fun shops like Lindenhaus Imports, the Wildewood Shop, and a small shopping center known as the Alpine Village Shoppes, which hosts 14 unique stores in a walkable mall.

In the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Northern Georgia is Dahlonega, affectionately known as the Heart of Georgia Wine Country. Today, Dahlonega is known for its amazing wineries, but it was also the first major American Gold Rush city. The roots of its Gold Rush days can still be felt in the town, which has amazing architecture and historical sites. To learn more about Dahlonega’s Gold Rush roots, you can tour the Dahlonega Gold Museum. However, there is one winery that stands out from the crowd: the Wolf Mountain Vineyards and Winery. Not only is it considered the best winery in Dahlonega, but many find it’s the best winery in the state! And if you want more ways to take in the scenery in Dahlonega, Yahoola Creek Park is a great place to go for a hike. Plus, it’s not too far from Cavender Creek Vineyards!

Apples aren’t the only thing that puts Ellijay on the map. It is also the mountain biking capital of Georgia!
