Why This Florida Town Deserves More Attention

As one of the most visited states in the country, Florida is booming with tourists. In fact, in 2024, the state received an estimated 142.9 million visitors, which is comparable to the population of Russia. Despite these record-breaking tourist numbers, certain towns in the state remain fairly unnoticed, overshadowed by more well-known destinations like Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. Micanopy is the perfect example of this phenomenon. Home to just roughly 650 residents, this small town is often missed. However, prairie lands filled with roaming bison, mouthwatering barbecue restaurants, and a thriving antiquing scene are just a few of the attractions that make it stand out. If you are ready to get away from the crowds this year and visit one of the state’s most underrated gems, you will love Micanopy.

Despite its small population, Micanopy is home to two impressive state parks. At Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, travelers will feel as if they are in Western America, greeted by roaming bison and feral horses that roam the area’s prairie lands. Beyond the bison and horses, the park is also home to alligators, deer, and nearly 300 species of birds. Lake Wauburg, a 300-acre lake in the park, populated with bass, speckled perch, and bream, is a popular place for anglers to spend the afternoon. There is also a boat ramp on the eastern shores of the lake, in case you want to go canoeing. Opportunities to hike are abundant, with the park offering eight trails, one of which is the 16-mile Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail.

Just a ten-minute drive from Paynes Prairie, travelers will reach Price's Scrub State Park, a 1,000-acre park that the state purchased to preserve the area’s biodiversity. There are 15 kinds of habitats found throughout the park, including scrubby flatwoods, mixed woodlands, and even a sinkhole lake. At the park’s northern end, travelers will find sandy hills, while the south features sandy flats. The best way to explore the area is along the park’s 9.5-mile trail network, where hikers, bikers, and horseback riders can enjoy the trails.
